PUNISHERMAX #20". Comic Book Roundup. Archived from the original on 2017-08-12 . Retrieved 2017-07-08.

The "Born" mini series strongly earns the five stars but the followup twelve issues of Punisher Max are also great. Barracuda was a great story and pitted Castle against the big mean brute known as Barracuda. Physically outmatching in Castle in spectacular fashion, he makes for a great antagonist. Only shortcoming of this story is that there is no personal aspect of the story that gives a more emotional insight into Frank Castle/The Punisher – so it feels a bit more functional than the stories that have come before. A good read nonetheless. Barracuda actually takes the spotlight in the first four issues of this book. The thing is, Barracuda is a fun character, but by himself? not as much. Still, the mini-series is entertaining enough and builds towards the next arc which is a million times better with the final showdown between Punisher and Barracuda. Then the next arc is Punisher dealing with the Military in a interesting way, and while overly long and unneeded letters from soldiers plotline was there, it still hit some good emotional moments. The last two stories are Punisher tying up loose ends on the people who killed his family, which is fantastic. Then there's Punisher The End, taken place in the future and it's pretty cheesy and not really all that interesting. The sixth volume of the Punisher Max Complete Collection is just as good as the previous volume. Collecting Punisher MAX X-Mas Special, Punisher: Naked Kill, Punisher: Get Castle, Punisher: Butterfly, Punisher: Happy Ending, Punisher: Hot Rods of Death, Punisher: Tiny Ugly World, Untold Tales of Punisher MAX #1-5. The second arc is Long Cold Dark ( Punisher Max #50-54), drawn by Howard Chaykin (#50) and Goran Parlov (#51-54). This arc follows a while after the preceding mini series, and sees the build-up to Barracuda's next meeting with the Punisher, as well as the actual clash. There are also some surprises in here, which both give Barracuda some leverage against Castle and provide new layers of depth to the characterisation of the Punisher. As the plot rolls out, it becomes clear that Ennis is pulling out all the stops towards the end of his run, and delivers at his finest. This is a clear five stars piece. The first 12 issues of the regular series abandon this premise fairly early on. The first arc has Micro leading a shady group to try and recruit Frank to go after Bin Laden. Frank declines. The second arc is a bit sillier with a bunch of Irish gangsters chasing a McGuffin and forgetting to be careful what they wish for. The tragedy that is ‘The Punisher’ is at the forefront of Garth’s final issues. Incredibly violent yet emotional, I was fully invested the whole way. The Third arc is "Kitchen Irish". This time the same mix of previously mentioned elements combine into a tale about two British operatives working with Frank to bring to justice some IRA terrorists that set off a bomb in Hells Kitchen. A really interesting and dark tale that works well with the addition of the British operatives working next to Frank. This book is split into three stories-BORN, IN THE BEGINNING, and KITCHEN IRISH. The first story, BORN was more of an origin story about Frank Castle in Vietnam and how he made a deal with the what I am assuming is Death A.K.A. The Grim Reaper to keep fighting "a war that never ends". And I think that's interesting that Ennis introduced some degree of a supernatural aspect to this. That's why he wears that skull on his chest. And it was important to tell that story.

Punisher: The Complete Collection Vol. 7 collects PunisherMAX issues 1-22 written by Jason Aaron with art by Steve Dillon. Volume three manages to be laugh out loud funny while also having the darkest collection of stories yet. This feels like all of Ennis’s quirks put into one hilarious, trashy, heartfelt, violent, and heavily anti corporation assemblage. PUNISHERMAX #22". Comic Book Roundup. The Punisher: The Complete Collection Vol. 6 collects Punisher Max: X-Mas Special, Punisher Max: Naked Kill, Punisher Max: Get Castle, Punisher Max: Butterfly, Punisher Max: Happy Ending, Punisher Max: Hot Rods of Death, Punisher Max: Tiny Ugly World, and Untold Tales of Punisher Max 1-5. Writer include Jason Aaron, Jonathan Maberry, Ron Williams, Valerie D’Orazio, Peter Milligan, Charlie Huston, David Latham, Jason Starr, Jason Latour, Megan Abbott, Nathan Edmondson, and Skottie Young with art by Roland Boschi, Laurence Campbell, Juan José Roy, Shawn Martinbrough, Dalibor Talajić, Connor Willumsen, Matteo Buffagni, Fernando Blanco, and Mirko Colak.

I’m having a love affair with Jason Aaron these days. His Thor: God of Thunder series really blew my mind, and this solidifies it for me; this guy knows how to make violence work! There was so much darkness between these covers. PUNISHERMAX #19". Comic Book Roundup. Archived from the original on 2017-08-12 . Retrieved 2017-07-08. It starts off with a fun tale of a scumbag crook running from The Punisher and ultimately perishing. Ya know, the kinda shit we specifically read Punisher books for. I loved this collection and it's my favorite take on the Punisher. It also probably has my favorite Punisher story.

Variety, tight plotting, recurring, well-written supporting characters (The Punisher being a very dour, not exactly talkative individual, needs a strong supporting cast to keep it interesting) and, above all, a great understanding of the character is what makes this series truly phenomenal. The brutal, R-rated violence doesn't hurt of course. It's how The Punisher should be done, after all. It fits perfectly. The book is in three distinct sections - Frank Castle's time during his hellish third tour in Vietnam; shady CIA operatives attempting to recruit Castle during his particularly bloody war on NY and NJ-area mafioso; and then Castle, with assistance from an old British colleague, taking on NY's usually warring Irish-American criminal families / gangs that have now uneasily united for a common goal. This continues Garth Ennis's famous run on The Punisher, and saying he stepped his game up in this one is an understatement. I enjoyed the three story arcs in the first collection but this volume seems like it could've even been written by a different person. Frank Castle's personality and character shine brighter darker, I felt much more connected to him, the action is even crazier, and all of the stories are even more compelling. While at times the first book and it's character's and events felt a little cheeky, especially with some of the supporting characters, everything here seems way more genuine and confident and didn't feel like it was playing for jokes. The next arc is more serious where Frank goes to stop basically a warmonger who he didn't finish off before. This also leads to old friends, lots of betrayals, and some actual sad deaths. All of this worked and the ending to the arc was pretty good. A little long but good. In the Beginning” is classic Punisher. This story, I think, is a great introduction to Punisher comics. The set-up is great: after taking down a bunch of mobsters all at once, Frank, now well into his 50s, is captured by an old acquaintance with an offer from the CIA. Meanwhile, rival mobsters swoop in to eliminate the Punisher for good and take over New York. This story is tense, well-paced, and pretty much a perfect action thriller. Also, Lewis LaRosa does an admirable job making Frank look like a grizzled Clint Eastwood. There are also a collection of one-shot stories dealing with some strange characters like a serial killer who follows the Punisher around, to a kid who wants revenge for his father's death at Punisher's hands.
