The clothing is intricate and colorful and absolutely stunning; the designer blended together the traditional fairytale costume elements with modern and traditional elements of clothing in Black culture, which so perfectly captures the spirit of the book. His new wife, Sonya, didn’t care much for Ebony, but she pretended to love her in the king’s presence. As springboards for further reading and exploration, readers may wish for source notes or context on the stories’ cultures of origin as well as the inspirations for the clothing and adornment. This book can hold its own in a print version as well because the stories are so good, and I would love to see the illustrations.

Of course, the shoe would only fit her; it's magic, and in those days shoes were more custom fitted than they are now. The crystal magic – it’s ‘perversion’ – was an nice way to expand the magic system and keep it feeling fresh. In the fall of 2000, the company's debt was purchased by Wells Fargo, which hounded the reemerging brand with collection fees until it eventually broke. But when their sizzling liaison leads to an unexpected pregnancy, Nik won’t rest until his child is part of the Drakon legacy. They are powerful; encouraging our children to love and honor themselves and others; use their skills and strengths for the good of the community; they are beautiful, smart, loving, and capable. On top of this, many parents have their own insecurities and doubt their ability to support their children through this journey. This adds greatly to our growing understanding of the Haitian Revolution, its turbulent aftermath and the cutthroat politics of revolutionary Haiti. It just didn't match the cadence, tropes, or ways women were written in the other African folk tales and books I had read or heard told. The first third of this anthology, “Childhood Reimagined,” consists of fairy tales from European traditions that highlight the beauty of Black characters. Only thing that I disliked was the white letters on the black pages was a bit hard to read but other wise really enjoyed this book. Alḥamdulillāh, our eldest daughter finished memorising the Qur’an aged 8; she was ecstatic that she beat her mother’s record. While I absolutely loved the representation, that's not something I can really talk much about, as I'm not a member of the black culture in any way shape or form but I can talk about the fairy tales that I grew up with and how fun it was to hear a different version of it full of inspiration, empowerment and not just advocating but modeling self worth, which I think are universal concepts we can all relate to and should be talking about with our daughters. They retell, change up, and create past, present, and future tales from Black culture across the diaspora. A bitter divorce between Herbert Haft and his wife tore the family apart, and pitted Crown Books founder Robert Haft against his father.

How did a man born enslaved on a plantation triumph over Napoleon’s invading troops and become king of the first free black nation in the Americas? A collection of reimagined classic fairy tales, and African and African American folktales that bring to life past, present, and future visions of Black culture. They may have different names than the European ones but fall into similar tropes and types as say a Sleeping Beauty or a Cinderella archetype. We are fortunate having been through the process ourselves to be able to guide and use our experiences to help our children. There seemed to be a conscious effort to give the protagonists happy endings, which I understand the value in doing. So far, I’ve read The Poisoned Apple, and loved that Ebony Black was taught to fight for herself, and her kind heart was just as important as her fierce spirit. Perhaps the most striking element in the picture is Asha's hair, a structure of carefully placed black braids and white pearls piled high on top of her head. In the retelling of Cinderella, "Asha the Little Cinder Girl," Asha wears an extravagant blue gown with purple tulle shooting from the bottom as Jamal, her Prince Charming, slides on a white high-top sneaker instead of a glass slipper. He may have craved her for a decade, but one exquisite night with Mia Rodriguez is all Nikandros Drakos, the Daredevil Prince of Drakon, will allow himself.

The familiar tales, such as "The Little Mermaid," "Sleeping Beauty," "Hansel and Gretel," "Red Riding Hood," and "The Poisoned Apple," are given a twist that breathes new life into them. But with divided loyalties and his closest friendship shaken, can their alliance hold against overwhelming odds? The original storylines remain largely intact, but these new versions make space for nuanced examinations of the genre, such as in “Goldi, the Girl with the Golden Locs,” in which an indulged, petulant child learns from a bear family about moderation and appreciation. At the beginning, Crown Books day-to-day operations were managed by Jose Gonzales (Vice President of Operations) and Jeanne Herrick (Vice President of Merchandising).
