This week Leica Geosystems release the newest member of the DISTO family: the DISTO D110. The diminutive D110 breaks the mould for Leica, sc... Leica’s top selling laser meter is one of the best value and most versatile measuring devices on the market, making it an ideal choice... Steel tapes used in Land Surveying are not flexible and are suitable for measuring leveled surfaces only. They may corrode easily when exposed to moisture and to prevent this tape, it should be cleaned and oiled after every use. These tapes are generally used for standardizing chains, measurements of constriction works, etc. A steel tape is made of steel or stainless steel. It consists of a steel strip of 6mm to 16mm wide. It is available in lengths of 1m, 5m, 8m, 10m, 20m, 30m and 50m. Meters, decimeters, and centimeters are graduated in the steel strip. Steel tapes generally came up with the metal case with automatic winding device. The tape is withdrawn from the case by using a hand during measuring and it is rewound into the case by just pressing button provided on the case. Just like fiberglass measuring tapes, cloth and linen tapes are not suitable where an accurate measurement needs to be taken. The cloth or linen tape stretch when tension is put on the line and shrinks when exposed to water. For those of you who need accurate measurements, whether it be in the garden or for construction purposes, sometimes a basic tape measure isn’t enough. They can be a bit flimsy to use and easily bend/move when moved, so they can actually end up being a real pain. If this sounds like a relatable issue, or if your tape measure just won’t cover a certain job you need to get done, then surveyors tape is for you and this review covers all you need to know about them.

Hook types vary significantly from one manufacturer and model to another but, on the whole, a surveyor's tape will use a metal (frequently coated or stainless steel) hook that folds away for safety whilst extended to hook around an item or anchor into the ground. S&R Surveyors Tape Measure Fiberglass 100m / 330 feet Double Marked Tape Reel, Extra Long Builders roll Tape, Width 13mm (Best but most expensive option) It’s expensive if you’re only going to be doing smaller jobs/smaller measurements, so only get this if you really need longer measurements taken. That said, it’s really suited to any job and if you’re not worried about price, we recommend just buying it for use in all jobs no matter how big. For 100m tape, the price is pretty good too, so it’s definitely good value for money. Surveyors and engineers tend to work in more inhospitable conditions than your average DIY enthusiast so even the casing for a surveyors’ tape needs to be up to working in tough conditions. Surveyors’ tapes are available in two distinct casings: closed reel and open reel. Both are intended to make the surveyor’s life a little bit easier. Fibreglass tapes can come in a variety of sizes, from as short as 5 meters, all the way up to 100 meters. A 30-meter fiberglass measuring tape. Cloth & Linen Tapes

Surveyors Tape Measures

Metal measuring tapes can be either flexible or non-flexible. If you try and measure a curved surface with a non-flexible tape measure you will likely permanently damage the tape. Also if exposed to moisture or retracted with dirt on the tape, this can cause the tape to corrode and affect the recall of the tape. Whatever the use, they’re ideal for common use and suitable for long distance/outdoor measurements compared to a standard tape measure. That said, there’s some important things to look for and consider when buying online but don’t worry, we have you covered with a buyers guide below. Ever come across a land surveyor without a tape measure? No, we haven’t either. It’s an essential piece of kit for any surveyor, civil or structural engineer... in fact, any construction professional. Finally, if you’re not sure what tape suits your requirements try our Online Tape Assistant or ask a question on online chat for advice from our knowledgeable team, many of whom have extensive surveying and engineering experience. Surveyors tape measures also come with two types of cases. The closed reel variety uses a more familiar design whereby the entire blade is encased within a plastic or steel shell thereby protecting the blade against accidental cuts etc. The open reel type, whilst more open to this type of damage, sees the blade held within a frame-style case which is not only lighter and frequently easier to carry, it also allows for much easier cleaning and prevents jamming when rewinding dirty tapes. Surveyors, why buy from The Tape Store? Put simply we know land surveyors need to take quality measurements so, naturally, we provide quality measuring tools. The most common type of tape measure a surveyor uses in the field is an 8-meter metal tape measure. They are popular as they are lightweight and compact, easy to carry around, durable, and they are able to measure accurately to the millimeter with good measuring practices the distance between two points.

The Advantages of a Class 1 Tape Measure

Surveyors' tapes, sometimes called long tapes, are generally 20m to 30m in length but can also range from 50m to 100m (some to an incredible 200m). They come in a wide range of materials which makes them ideal for many different purposes. Trumeter is one of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of high quality distance measuring products. Used originally in the... Similar to the surveyors tape in the first place, this product is made from an ergonomic plastic that is perfect for surveyors tape and is lightweight and robust. It doesn’t feel cheap and only costs middle money, so if you’re wanting surveyors tape for more casual use, especially around the garden or in building jobs, this is ideal for you. Its tape is made from fibreglass and has a hook on the end, which can be a pain if you’re only measuring flat ground but is typically useful in the garden. It retracts easily and is simple to use, so it has all that you need. HKB ® 1 piece measuring tape, 100 m tape measure with fibreglass tape, plastic orange with ergonomic handle, fold-out crank, 2 scales (Best long distance option) Firstly, this tape feels not only robust, but also lightweight enough to be carried around on the job. It has a sturdy handle which doesn’t feel at all flimsy or cheap, and it’s dead easy to use. Its ergonomics are great and the handle is comfortable, mostly because the plastic casing is made from ABS (popular thermoplastic polymer in plastic engineering) which is pretty comfortable on the hands. The winding handle is the same and feels sturdy too, so overall, the ergonomics and design of this product is perfect for surveyors tape.

A woven metallic tape is an improved version of linen tape. Brass or copper made wires are used as reinforcement for the linen material. Hence, it is more durable than normal linen tape. A brass ring is provided at the end of the tape which is included in the length of the tape. Woven metallic tapes are are available in different lengths of 2m, 10m, 15m, 20m, 30m, and 50m. These are used for survey works such as topographical survey works where minor errors are not taken into consideration. These are not common measuring tapes and personally, I have never seen another surveyor use one of these in the field. The only time I have actually seen one of these is in my Dad’s toolbox, which was given to him by his father. Invar Tapes In our fourth place spot is another fantastic surveyors tape, but this time we are noting it for being the most expensive (yet worth the money) product in this list. It’s priced at similar money when compare to the Draper, and measures 100m, so it definitely could be worse, but it’s still expensive. In other words, this is the tape we suggest you buy if you’re not worried about price or even length, as having more available length to measure with is better than having too little. Synthetic tapes used in Land Surveying are made of glass fibers coated with PVC. These are light in weight and flexible. They are available in lengths of 5m, 10m, 20m, 30m, and 50m. Synthetic tapes may stretch when subjected to tension. Hence, these are not suitable for accurate surveying works. However, synthetic tapes are recommended in place of steel tapes where it is essential to take measurements in the vicinity of electric fences and railway lines, etc.

This review focuses on the 6 best options for surveyors tape currently on the market, focusing on 30m, 50m and 100m tapes, as these are the most commonly used tapes for most jobs requiring surveyors tape. Realistically, you won’t be needing lengths any longer than that (apart from the rare event you measure something bigger than 100m!), so products with these lengths are most appropriate. Before we get into it, it’s worth knowing more about surveyors tape as although you’re likely reading this to find out which product is best for you, you might be wondering why they’re useful or what they’re for, so we want to make sure we have you covered for this. What is surveyors tape and what’s it used for? The 50m long tape, otherwise known as a surveyors' tape measure, is the most popular length of tape sold at The Tape Store after the 30m tape. It's not hard to work out why when you consider that you get so much tape for such a reasonable price! Despite there being a full 20 metres of additional tape, a 50m tape measure is frequently only a few pounds more than its equivalent 30m little brother. Fibreglass tapes are commonly used when accurate distances are not required to be measured. Applications for their use can be: While some land surveyors believe that a Tape Survey isn't a survey at all and a few others believe Tape Survey to be a meaningless term, actually a Surveyors Tape (sometimes referred to as a Tape Measure) is a valuable tool and Tape Surveys are important, in my opinion. In fact there are more than 5 types of Tapes used in Land Surveying for linear measurements.

You're also getting superior flexibility too... it goes without saying that, when you hit thirty metres, you're all out of measuring! A fifty metre model obviously gives a whole load more length and, with such a minimal price differential, why not cover all bases and go longer?
