Description

Released on the AfriDocs platform in conjunction with UNESCO, the film, which takes an intimate look into the African classroom and the consequences of not teaching children in their mother tongue, was made available in 27 indigenous African languages in addition to French, Portuguese and English.

This structural device is a central element of the novel and is reflected in the title, "Alphabetical Africa," which hints at the book's linguistic playfulness. Abishs Afrika, gebeutelt von kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen, Überbleibseln europäischer Kolonialherrschaft und den Versuchen des Transvestiten Queen Quat, den Kontinent orange zu streichen, durch den wir die zwielichtigen Protagonisten Alex und Allen sowie den Autor A.I am an unreliable reporter", the narrator eventually acknowledges (though the reader will have long suspected it). It was initially developed in 1928 by the International Institute of African Languages and Cultures from a combination of the English alphabet and the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). In the first chapter, every word must begin with A (“Ages ago, Alex, Allen, and Alva arrived at Antibes, and Alva allowing all, allowing anyone, against Alex’s admonition, against Allen’s angry assertion: another African amusement. The screening was the first ever simultaneous multi-lingual live stream of any film to all 54 African countries.

The documentary Colours of the Alphabet, produced by University of the West of Scotland academic and Director of the Creative Media Academy, Professor Nick Higgins and directed by Dr Alastair Cole of the University of Newcastle, was screened across Africa on 21 Feb 2018. The novel is not a post-colonial commentary on the state of the continent -- or at least that is not its primary focus. Of course, the word "the" can only be used between the two chapter T's (a limitation Perec and his translator both wrestled with in "A Void" - though of course Perec did have the feminine singular form available). The sentence's alliteration and repetition also make it memorable and serve as a demonstration of the author's stylistic prowess. Abish's style, even when unhampered by artificial constraints, is rather chastened and elliptic, so his fettered progress is steadier than you might imagine. Er denkt in Sätzen, deren Logik und Witz letztlich nicht durch die Einschränkungen seiner Regel erklärbar sind - und dass diese Sätze in der Übersetzung von Jürg Laederach auch einmal einen Salto mehr vollführen, ist nur teilweise daraus zu erklären, dass er durch den alphabetischen Zwang mitunter größere Umwege gehen muss. In one of his first published short stories, for instance, his gem "Escapement" (1956), a man watching the tele with his wife experiences a bizarre hiccup in time's immutable ticktock, during which he discovers himself reliving the same fifteen minute span from 9:00-9:15 P.The first chapter has only words starting with "A," the second chapter has only words starting with "A" or "B," and so on until you reach the 26th chapter, where the author is allowed to use all possible words. As you read Nakamura Reality (and do know it will be difficult not to complete it in one sitting), keep in mind this dualism Austin first evokes here with the imagery of waves: inside versus outside, far versus near. I found myself composing sentences in my sleep, and each word in the sentences began with an A, B, or a C.

It introduces the novel's distinctive linguistic structure and playfulness, hints at themes of conflict and cultural clash, and sets the stage for a narrative that explores the experiences of its characters. At some point, the novel even uses sentences that mimic the abecedarian structure of the novel: All black scholars dream about her [Alva]. The first O-chapter features a premature P in the penultimate paragraph: "As fast as I finish it, I promise her.The story reaches maximum freedom at the midpoint of the book; then, in strict accordance with the overall constraint, the frame begins to become more rigorous again.
