Reiner did, after all, direct another one of my favorite 80s films (*cough cough* The Princess Bride) and is, according to Stephen King, the best choice to adapt his novels (we all know he hates Kubrick and doesn’t care for any of the tv shows inspired by his work). I cannot pledge myself completely as a horror lover if I don’t indulge in some of Stephen King’s books. Both are very strong tales, some say his best (I've only read Dreamcatcher, FYI), and that is the same case here.
Many of his titles are the basis for major motion pictures including IT , Stand By Me (adapted from The Body ) and The Shawshank Redemption , which is IMDb's top-rated movie of all time. They tease the dog and Milo through the dump's fence until Milo insults Teddy's father, who'd stormed the beaches at Normandy during World War II and had lost his mind. I would highly recommend this alongside "Shawshank Redemption" because of the human element layered in the story. The final two chapters describe the fate of Gordie's three friends, none of whom survive past young adulthood. While they play poker, Vern Tessio bursts in with exciting news: he informs his three friends that he has overheard his older brother Billy talking with his friend Charlie Hogan, about the location of the corpse of Ray Brower, a boy from Chamberlain, a town 40 miles or so east of Castle Rock, who has gone missing, while going out to pick blueberries with one of his mother's pails. Smart and tough Chris Chambers, a kid from a family that supplies Castle Rock with alcoholics and juvenile delinquents, is being seriously abused by his father and is seen as a worthless and even dangerous person because of his family.
Teddy himself becomes enraged with Milo and tries to climb the fence to attack him but he's dragged off by his friends. It describes the next year or so briefly, stating that Teddy and Vern drift off, befriending some younger boys whom they can lord over in the treehouse.I've read other Stephen King short stories and I must confess: he has a way with words and storytelling. We’re entering the depths of summer now, and I recommend giving this a look if it’s been a while since your last read. In the present day, Gordie tells how he learned of Chris's death after he was fatally stabbed while trying to stop an argument in a restaurant, about the deaths of Vern and Teddy (in a house fire and car accident respectively), about his successful writing career, and about his recent visit to Castle Rock, where he found that Ace has become an alcoholic and ordinary worker. If you think you've experienced a Stephen King book by watching the film adaption, I assure you, you're mistaken.
