But the final scenes showing that Richard chooses to continue the struggle (especially in contrast with all the people that died around him who had that choice of life or action taken away from them directly or indirectly) and choosing to accept and perhaps even love himself, and the somewhat open ending on glorious, beautiful imagery the only way Aya Kanno knows how, is really powerful. Yes, power and glory is an illusion and tragic as an overarching theme, but for Richard, his final message is of self-love and acceptance. However, the second occasion is uncomfortable. Richard is captured by the enemy and is assaulted. His shirt is cut open revealing his chest. In this scene, Richard is drawn in...what I can only describe as a wistful, pretty, anime boy kind of style. And given the context of this scene, it feels out of place. My fear while reading this series is that the author, Kanno is attempting to romanticize and sexualize Richard’s dysphoria and his body in a way that is supposed to appeal to and titillate an audience. I’m not saying that this IS the intention, but it is something I’m concerned about while reading. Who is this story meant for? Does this story have good intentions? Or is this just written out of some morbid curiosity and fetishization? Is this story good representation? I don’t know. I haven’t read enough of it to know. And honestly, on some of those questions my opinion is irrelevant. I am far more interested in hearing from the LGBT and Intersex community on the subject. a b c d e f g h i j Hazra, Adriana (31 January 2022). A second spin-off manga series, Bara-Ō no Sōretsu: Gaiden ( 薔薇王の葬列 外伝, "Requiem of the Rose King: Side Stories"), began serialization in the April 2022 issue of Monthly Princess on 4 March 2022. [17] [64] The series is written and illustrated by Kanno, and its chapters will be collected into two tankōbon volumes. The series focuses on events not covered in the main series, including stories about the characters' everyday lives and Queen Margaret's past. [65] No. a b Hodgkins, Crystalyn (6 October 2021). Joan of Arc is twisted into a mischievous spirit, and for those who are religious like me, it would be best if you don't take offense at a lot of the liberties this manga took regarding faith. Saying that, religion is a prominent part of the manga, but it isn't shoved down your throat either so both atheists and religious folk can enjoy the story. Regardless, this was set in a time where religion was a big part of life. In this first volume, we meet many of the characters, including Richard’s parents. The Duke of York is very handsomely depicted; he loves his youngest son and always offers encouragement (and he has this beautiful long, flowing hair). His mother Cecily, however, despises this son and is always demeaning him. We also meet gentle Henry VI, who would happily abdicate the throne if it meant the killing would stop, as well as Richard’s brothers Edward and George. Also on hand is William Catesby who in this version of things serves the York household and is one of the few who knows the truth about Richard.I really loved this volume of the manga. It's clear that Aya Kanno has done research on the Wars of the Roses and knows the history. I love how they are able to weave history with the story they are wanting to tell. It makes the story so interesting and I've been so invested when I have been reading this story. I love how it's a retelling of Henry VI and Richard III from Shakespeare as well. Una historia de fantasía gótica que es un poquito difícil de comprender al principio debido a la cantidad de personajes que se presentan en pocas páginas. Poco a poco se van ubicando mejor todos los personajes y las dos familias principales. Richard's choice at the end to keep on struggling and somewhat be at peace with all the choices he has made hurling him towards all the losses in his life is very moving and compelling and strangely life-affirming (I am aware I am a weirdo that sees this as life-affirming as opposed to tragic). A major theme of this series is how the crown and power is an illusion, and is the tragedy and downfall of the entire cast of characters, especially Richard.

i'm horribly tempted to book talk this on my professional blog but i don't think i'm quite ready for my coworkers to know the kind of soap opera nonsense i find entertaining yet. maybe once i've got a permanent positionIn the midst of this endless struggle for the throne Cecily Neville, the beloved duchess of noble Richard of the house of York gives birth to...a devil's spawn... What's completely thrown me are the liberties that Kanno has taken with the characters and historical inspiration. I mean, first off, Kanno decided to swap the physical deformity of Shakespeare's Richard III to him now being intersex (!?!?) and Joan of Arc is a character, but she's now a spirit who haunts Richard. UMMM?? A spin-off novel, Bara-Ō no Sōretsu Original Novel: Itsutsu no Makuai ( 薔薇王の葬列 original novel 五つの幕間, "Requiem of the Rose King Original Novel: Five Interludes"), was published by Akita Shoten on 15 December 2021. The novel was written by Yō Makusu, with cover art by Kanno. [15] [88] The art is typical shoujo-fare: very lithe, tall and beautiful people with sharp features everywhere. It is very pretty to look at though.
