About this deal

The book feels a bit dated now, A child being left to find somewhere to live whilst her relatives move to America to live, school does nothing just accepts the change. Bogwoppit is a light-hearted, lively story, brilliantly told by Ursula Moray Williams, author of Gobbolino.

With a new foreword and the original drawings by Shirley Hughes, it’s a great pleasure to see this title by a gifted storyteller back in print. Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse, written while expecting her first child, remained in print throughout her life from its publication in 1939.They included The Good Little Christmas Tree of 1943, and Gobbolino, the Witch’s Cat first published the previous year. He was quite prepared to believe that the Bogwoppit existed, but not that people behaved as they did throughout the book. It immediately sold out but disappeared until re-issued in abridged form by Kaye Webb at Puffin Books twenty years later, when it became a best-seller. It is, she discovers, a bogwoppit, an animal assumed extinct, and one of many that come up through the drains from the outside pond. Her classic stories often involved brave creatures who overcome trials and cruelty in the outside world before finding a loving home. When Aunt Lily marries and moves to America, orphan Samantha is packed off to her Aunt Daisy, who has no time for children. however, Aunt Lily and Samantha have never really got on, and Samantha does not feel wanted or loved. Luckily, Samantha discovers a furry, blue-eyed creature living in the cellar: a bogwoppit, once believed to be extinct.

I love it just as much today as I did back then, and I think it’s a brilliantly constructed, cleverly written and humorous story that will appeal to any generation. It seems as though Samantha and her aunt will never agree - until one day Aunt Daisy mysteriously disappears and Samantha plans a big rescue operation! It used to make me think amazing things can happen to anyone, which is always the best kind of children’s book. Biography: Ursula Moray Williams was born on 19 April 1911 at Petersfield, Hampshire, ten minutes after her twin sister, Barbara. Their relationship gets off to a shaky start, made all the more precarious by the unexpected appearance in the kitchen of a curious wide-eyed creature with a long furry tale, feathered wings and two webbed feet. The appeal of this book is the humour and the sheer level of imagination that has gone into the story.

Many people will know Ursula Moray Williams for her more famous books, Gobbolino the Witch’s Catand The Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse, both of which I loved, but my favourite of her books was always Bogwoppit.

She wrote and illustrated over sixty books for children with the most notable being Gobbolino the Witch's Cat and The Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.
