Not a major point, but I was quite taken with the rectangular metal lens hood he had purchased for the lens. R is a fast ‘normal’ prime for Fujifilm’s X system that behaves much like the classic 50mm lenses which used to be supplied with 35mm film SLRs.

But let’s compare it to the main alternative, the Fujifilm 35mm f2 lens and see when which is a better fit. We traveled for six weeks in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand in early 2017, and due to space and weight constraints in my backpack, I only brought two lenses, the XF 35mm f/1. ASPH is among the best lenses I've ever tested, excelling at both the technical aspects of sharpness, falloff and distortion, as well as the artistic aspects of ergonomics and bokeh. You may have guessed, based on what I said above, but my personal opinion is that for the vast majority of you, the XF 35mm F2 R WR is the better choice. For most of the shooting that I do I have found the F2 aperture to be plenty and the bokeh/DOF is enough for me as well. Some posts may contain affiliate links that make me a tiny bit of money: enough for a bus ticket or a couple of espressos, perhaps. Fun With Fuji's mission is to help both beginners and experts use Fuji's X System to achieve their photography goals. This, I am sure, you will know, and I only mention it for those just starting out in photography, as we all have been there at the beginning, purchased a lens because of the reviews and images, only then to find it doesn't exactly suit our requirements.

I’ve had this lens for many years now, and it can definitely take the punishment of being used on a daily basis. It is annoyingly slow (understandable for such an old lens) but when you get it right, it can be magical. I’m still trying to settle on the perfect travel set-up that covers both weekend city breaks and more adventurous trips. That said, there are two cheaper alternatives we’ll look at later: the 35mm XF f2 WR and the 35mm XC f2. This obsession with insanely fast autofocus performance everyone has today is not really a metric that’s relevant to casual everyday photography and I wouldn’t worry too much about it unless you need the lens to do something extremely specific.

it’s honestly been great at keeping up with my little on and my dog, which is many what i take photos of at home these days, and i know i’d miss so many shots if i had paired a slower auto-focus lens with my slower/older camera body. So, whatever your choice ends up being you are going to have yourself an excellent lens that is going to help you capture some amazing moments and epic imagery.

That feeling that you need to be ‘out there’, ‘doing things’, ‘making the most of it’… there’s only so much you can take.
