Our Cornish ale guide gives you some examples of delicious ales from Cornish breweries to try when you’re here on holiday. See how many of these 9 real ale breweries you can spot in the local pubs! Skinner’s Brewery We love hops! And so do you. We all can’t get enough of those little green cones. Case and point, in 2021, the Pacific Northwest (PNW) grew a record high 116 million pounds of hops. And last year, despite several climate challenges, the entire country accounted for 61,777 acres of hops. Good for first in the world. So when we say the word “hops,” what pops into your mind? Three little letters, right? I-P-A. Well, we’re here to tell you that those aren’t the only three letters that should burst into your brain. What about APAs, aka American pale ales? Almost a misnomer of sorts, American pale ales are anything but “pale.” In fact, some may argue that American pale ales are one of the most important styles in the history of craft beer in this country; American IPAs may not exist without these progenitors. The setting inspired their innovative flavours and the names of their ales, such as their ruby ale, Beast of Bodmin. The beast of Bodmin moor is a local story. Various sightings have been reported of a large wild cat or beast on the Cornish moorland. The vast, rugged moorland is quite spooky in the dark! The Beast of Bodmin ale has a complex, malty flavour with a fruity bite to it. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Founder Ken Grossman began dabbling in homebrewing as a teenager in 1969. But it was during a climbing trip to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in 1978 when the idea to build a brewery first came to mind. Grossman set out creating Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., handbuilding the brewhouse from scratch using primarily dairy equipment. Eventually, he turned his attention to brewing the perfect pale ale.

The hops are key here, supported by a light-toasted pale malt and clean-fermenting ale yeast. When you think of American pale ales, these beers should taste a tad floral but also juicy with big notes of orange, grapefruit, and other citrus. Although newer to the market, Haze Charmer has already charmed many people. In fact, this beer won “Best of the Mid-Atlantic Pale Ale” at the 2020 U.S. Beer Tasting Championship.According to Dogfish Head, they named this beer “Shelter Pale Ale” because they “think of a shelter as being a place you come home to.”

Their extensive range of award-winning beverages covers everything from pale ale and Cornish lager, to bitter, stout and red ale. St Austell Brewery ales and beers dominate many of the pubs in Cornwall, so you won’t have to go far to find some! We’d say that Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is the perfect version of this style with Cascade. And Pseudo Sue is the equally impeccable one for Citra. Take your first sip, and prepare to be swept away by Atlantic Pale Ale's lively symphony of flavours. The initial burst of fruity hops gives way to a subtle malt sweetness, culminating in a crisp, clean finish that leaves you thirsting for more. With an ABV of 4.5%, it's the perfect companion for a leisurely afternoon spent basking in the sun, or a raucous evening of sea shanties and merriment. The Atlantic ale has a more tropical and citrus taste, making it more of a refreshing summer drink, ideal for watching the sunset over the Atlantic ocean. In February 2023, Drake’s announced that it would be joining forces with Bear Republic, buying the brewery’s recipes, formulas, and intellectual property. For this reason, we’re including the brewery’s flagship pale ale on this list. Because while Drake’s only currently distributes to California, Arizona, and Nevada, Bear Republic distributes to twenty-three states. So while it hasn’t happened yet, we do predict Drake’s footprint will expand in the future. At the moment though, use the Drake’s Beer Finder to locate a 1500 pale ale near you. Not only one of the best interpretations of an American pale ale, but also one of the most iconic beers in history, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is quite simply the perfect pale ale. Even the best beers can fall flat in the wrong environment. Follow these tips from our beer experts to keep yours in top condition:

All thanks to the game-changing American pale ale. (And we haven’t even mentioned Dale’s Pale Ale, another revolutionary APA that started the canning revolution.)The voluminous hopped mutha delivers a hoppy nose and assertive-but-balanced flavors of pale malts and citrusy floral hops from start to finish,” reads the beer’s Untappd description. In late 1980, Sierra Nevada Founder Ken Grossman set out to make a beer that showcased his love of one particular Pacific Northwest hop: Cascade. What truly sets Atlantic Pale Ale apart from its contemporaries is its exceptional balance and drinkability. It pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, from fresh seafood to hearty pub classics. Its distinct character and undeniable charm make it the perfect choice for any gathering, whether you're sharing tales of adventure with fellow seafarers or simply enjoying a quiet pint at your favourite coastal retreat.
