If you have a fair amount of excess, you can cut some of it away with cuticle cutters before grabbing the included nail file, but I find the cutting step to be mostly unncessary. The biggest issue is always adhesion, where the strips start to peel up at the tips after a few days of wear. Use a manicure stick/cuticle pusher to push the nail strip away from the corner of the cuticle area.
