Without realizing it the one thing a self-proclaimed straight-acting gay man craves is acceptance for his feminine qualities. And the impact of this kind of gender bias on the identity development of children and adolescents is profound.

Though being gay no longer has much of a stigma in some parts of the country, being a sissy still does — even among gay men.

This 1935 “Comicolor” oddity takes place at a schoolhouse where a pet lamb upsets the talent show during the last day at school. None of this means that when we are fully loved and accepted, both by others and ourselves, that we will suddenly act feminine. Not surprisingly, everyone who is attuned to these issues and who works with children and adolescents is full of similar internal tensions. Then it was the archetype of what it meant to be a gay man in popular culture: The sissy was someone to laugh at, to mock, and off screen, to brutalize without fear of reprisals.
