Description

What makes the Magee books even more magnificent is that fact that the text on all 36 pages is written in sweet, humorous and intelligent rhyme. Author/illustrator Chris Van Dusen brings humor, adventure, lively language, and richly colored, kinetic illustrations to all of his children’s books. The illustrations are bright and colorful with a vaguely 50's look and a great deal of energy, as well as subtle jokes. I am biased because pictures are what makes or breaks a book for me so I love this book and all of the other ones by this author/illustrator. Okay, I've done a fair amount of camping, though very little with an RV, but even I know you usually unhook the camper and definitely block the wheels! Or you get a great story, but the drawings are either too idiosyncratic or too mannered to engage your youngster. As the book is read aloud, the text is highlighted, allowing a child to follow along and read to himself or herself. The next thing the two campers know, they are plunging down a mountain, racing down a river, and teetering on the edge of a waterfall!Identify at least 2 characteristics of this genre and subgenre and discuss how they appear in your book. The illustrations in this book are amazing and if you are wondering where you have seen art like this before, maybe you are remembering the Mercy Watson (pig) books as this author also illustrated those books! The rhymes are not forced and read naturally, allowing a kid to appreciate the matter of rhyme while still enjoying a clear and crisply told story. There are always lots of giggles and smiles as the kids listen and look at the beautifully illustrated pages! I again like the retro Maine setting, and that the milkman's truck seems to make a subtle appearance in every Mr. Meet your favorite book creators, launch an author study, browse our themed booklists, get tips on how to choose and use kids’ books, find guidance on building a more diverse bookshelf, celebrate annual literacy events with us, and more!

Magee (Chronicle) (2003), If I Built a Car (Puffin) (2005) and I’ve had a ball illustrating Kate DiCamillo’s Mercy Watson series (Candlewick). He has been treating patients with varicose veins since 1988 and has been a Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital since 1996. Great pacing keeps the story moving even though it's long, and manages to have age appropriate thrills as well as some classic camping scenes.
