Description

Alfie's Feet Alfie has new yellow boots that are perfect for walking through puddles and stamping in mud.

Shirley Hughes was born in West Kirby, near Liverpool, in 1927, and studied fashion and dress design at Liverpool Art School, before continuing her studies at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford. In the end, Alfie had his yellow rain boots on the wrong foot; his mom paints an L on the left rain boot and an R on the right rain boot. Alfie is very proud of being able to put on his new boots by himself but wonders why they feel funny? Alfie gets a brand new pair of yellow wellies so he can splash through puddles and stamp about in the mud. Beautifully written by the ever popular Shirley Hughes with wonderfully accurate illustrations I'm sure every child would love following Alfie's feet into the puddles and every parent would identify with the text. This story is about young Alfie’s experience of getting new boots and trying them out in the park, only to discover that he’s put them on the wrong feet. All small children will be able to identify with Alfie and Annie Rose, two hugely appealing pre-schoolers who are constantly tackling new experiences and making new friends. Alfie wishes that he could be friends with the most popular big boy, Ian Barger, but Ian never takes any notice of the little kids. This one is particularly rich in tactile images: you can almost hear the flapping of the birds he chases as he splashes through cool puddles in his boots; you can smell the ink as Mother writs an “L” and “R” on the left and right boots; you see the steam rising from wet socks hung up by the fire.I remembered reading this to my kids back in the early Nineties and fast forward to now my Granddaughter of Fifteen months loves this book. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

She also collaborated with her daughter, Clara Vulliamy, on the Dixie O'Day series; which saw Shirley with an illustrator for the first time with Shirley writing the text and Clara creating the illustrations. So beautifully observed, that not only are her books a complete joy to adults reading with little ones, but a child of only 16 months can also be seen to pay close attention and love this book!

It is an intriguing story and could encourage children to think of their experiences of stamping in muddy puddles and understand Alfie’s feelings of the enjoyment and excitement he may be experiencing. Couldn't believe it when my daughter not only remembered all of this particular book and actually still had it with others of her favourite books. Like all the Alfie books, this one is characterized by Hughes’ detailed, warm renderings of a loving family.
