Still, it was a good investment, and I will read through it several more times as I work toward my goal. I do like the way Richards' book is structured with the reviews/questions/vocabulary in the back of each chapter. An unmissable collection of eight unconventional and captivating short stories for young and adult learners of Irish, Short Stories in Irish for Beginners has been written especially for students from high-beginner to low-intermediate level. I've since reached fluency in Spanish, but I will always look back to this book as one of the key milestones.

Instead of pausing to look up every word, you'll absorb new vocabulary from the context of the story, and have the satisfaction of that moment when you say: "I totally understood that sentence! PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your Library section along with the audio on our desktop site. When used correctly (there are instructions at the beginning of the book), you will really enjoy your experience. There is already so much available educational material in Latin American Spanish and things like the vosotros forms are all but ignored in those books. From science fiction to fantasy, to crime and thrillers, Short Stories in Spanish for Intermediate Learners uses reading as the perfect tool to not only delight in learning Spanish, but to accelerate your journey towards fluency. In a book aimed at language learners, even if it’s common in Spanish texting and informal communication to omit either question marks or exclamation marks, shouldn’t they be included in a book? To be frank I still used translator to translate some words even though the majority of these words I learned before but still not everything you can remember until you practice it in a daily base. I need that rereading opportunity; in fact, I have to study the vocab and reread a few times before I move on.

It will be too slow for advanced or native speakers, but for intermediates it is excellent listening practice. I liked the layout where key vocabulary was defined for you in each chapter and mini quizzes let me know how well I did (or didn't) understand the story. Le he dado cuatro estrellas porque disfuté de esta forma divertida/diferente de aprender y fue bueno aprender más vocabulario, pero las historias son un poco básicas. Now I just have to work out how to balance my language learning/practice time between maintaining my Welsh and actually getting somewhere with the Spanish. I had a visceral sense of improving my ease of understanding with each story, which helped me to continue.I was looking for a more casual reading experience that didn't necessarily feel like I was supposed to be learning as I read. This is quite useful if you don't pay too much attention to the actual content of the stories - by this I mean you should use it as a learning tool, rather than expecting an engrossing story. The stories are actually really interesting and fun and had me gripped (except one that I had trouble understanding, but I was listening whilst doing things and I really should have looked up a word that kept cropping up!

Each succeeding story increased in length and complexity, incorporating previously-encountered vocabulary and grammatical structures but in new contexts, thereby providing essential (and not overly repetitive) practice.

Probably good for youngsters who don’t ask a lot of questions about how likely this story might be, but quite frustrating to read as an adult.

Even cooler, at the end of each chapter, you have a summary ("Resumen" in Spanish) + Key Vocabulary + Reading Comprehension questions.I liked the introduction and the method he wants readers to follow as they progress through the story: read the chapter all the way through, then read the summary of the chapter (in Spanish as well), go through the vocabulary list (bolded in the story), and try to answer a few multiple choice questions (checking for basic understanding of key details; all in Spanish). But that gripe apart these are good stories for a student to work on as long as you understand that as a beginner you have no chanceof understanding these stories at an initial hearing.
