Johnny was hard to watch, especially at the beginning – he was hurting, and losing a spouse is hard for others to understand, but it was really tough to see how he wasn’t there for his kids. Fly Away follows three female characters: famous chat-show host Tully, who is left devastated and adrift following her best friend's death; Kate's teenage daughter Marah, who is haunted by how she treated her mother during her final months; and also Tully's troubled mother, Cloud, who is looking to get back in touch. While Netflix is yet to confirm a second season, fans are expecting the next instalment to also rely heavily on the books’ sequel, Fly Away. Although this is still being used as a treatment today for severe depression, the way in which it was done in the late 50s and early 60s was barbaric! I had to keep reminding myself which came first, and the story of TullyandKate came first by these well written, emotionally charged books. Some of the ambiance of Firefly Lane was lost in this book, because it’s pretty much set in the modern time in a hospital, but the setting is still really strong throughout.I knew I didn't really want to watch it unfold and that I should avert my gaze, but I just couldn't do it. An emotionally-complex, heartwrenching novel about love, family, motherhood, loss, and redemption, 'Fly Away' reminds us that where there is life, there is hope and where there is love, there is forgiveness. All the people in this extended family ended up with wonderful understanding of their relationships. Then because of her “behavior,” Dorothy is committed to a treatment center where she undergoes shock therapy or Electroconvulsive therapy. We learn far more about Cloud, in particular, and we also learn more about Tully's journey before and after Kate's death, and see Marah try to work through her grief over her mother.

It was too sad, there was too much depression, and drugs, and cutting, and anxiety and it was just too much. For the first time, I wrote a novel that spanned decades and touched on popular culture and delved into the relationship between best friends. I think it’s best to read the first book in the series before it but this novel can definitely stand on it own as a highly engaging read.
