Dutch symphonic metal pioneers DELAIN break into new realms with their eagerly awaited, brand new full-length, Dark Waters, out February 10, 2023 via Napalm Records. Former Nightwish vocalist Marco Hietala has appeared on numerous Delain albums over the years, and his distinctive style helps elevate "Invictus," which is the album's centerpiece. Songs like the soaring previously released standalone single, “The Quest and the Curse”, as well as “The Cold” (the latter featuring a real, epic choir), lure with a bombastic sound that skillfully combines orchestral melodies, epic heavy riffs and marvelous vocal performances. Similar to Xandria's line-up issues, I also had worries that Delain will no longer be one of my favourite female fronted metal bands after Charlotte Wessels was out as her voice is so charming with high recognition value.

With some former members in tow, Martijn has recreated the sound of before, new vocalist Diana sounds similar to Charlotte and the album is packed full of great tunes. In the end this is full of energy, catchy lyrics and melodies, and enough substance to make it great. Many songs are strong, catchy and symphonic in best Delain tradition and also the new singer makes a good job, coming close to her predecessor in style. Queen of Shadow”merges the orchestral and synth-focused soundscapes DELAIN is known for as it weaves melodic heavy guitars that intertwine with orchestral lines and vocal melodies. The future of the veteran Dutch symphonic metal band Delain was unclear after the lineup disbanded in early 2021, leaving only keyboardist Martijn Westerholt. On 15 February 2021, it was announced that Delain's lineup had split up, and that it would be continuing with a new lineup that Westerholt stated would continue to "keep Delain alive", which consists of new and previous members. She has the biggest shoes to fill on the band's seventh album Dark Waters, replacing longtime singer and face of the band Charlotte Wessels, who departed to pursue a solo career. While not their finest hour, the very existence of Dark Waters – and the fact that it doesn’t suck – is a marvel, and live shows will hopefully rekindle their fanbase’s once rabid loyalty. Rounding out the current incarnation of Delain are bassist Ludovico Cioffi ( Carnality, The Modern Age Slavery) and vocalist Diana Leah.
