About this deal

Back in 2016 when Arrow released Hellraiser: The Scarlet Box (which only included the first three films), they bestowed each with a 2K restoration from the original 35mm interpositive. She regales her story to the Institutes Head (Kenneth Cranham), unbeknownst to her that he has long been fascinated with the exploration of pleasure, pain and its impact on the mind. The feature debut of director Barnaby Clay, Magnet Releasing’s The Seedingcenters on a hiker who gets lost in the desert and seeks refuge with a woman who is living alone. If you love supernatural stories filled with gore and blasphemy then the "Hellraiser" series of films is just for you.

Here’s a little rundown: Brand new 4k restorations of all four films from the original camera negatives by Arrow Films Ultra High Definition (2160p) presentations of all four films in Dolby Vision (hdr10 compatible) Original lossless stereo and Dts-hd Ma 5. The special effects are magnificent, even the collector’s item of some stop motion animation (a real lost art). However the toymaker is killed before he can complete work on a second box to neutralise the horrific powers of his first and Angelique is now free to indulge her desires. Likewise, this tightening up of fine detail is readily apparent and first-generation images look stunningly sharp. The story takes place after the events of the first film as we see Kirsty ( Ashley Laurence) committed to an asylum under the care of the classy yet perverse Dr Channard (played exquisitely by British stage actor Kenneth Cranham) who throughout the film establishes his character as one of the most twisted and memorable in horror cinema. This highly-anticipated release brings back the bone-chilling intensity and visceral experience of Clive Barker’s twisted imagination, immersing audiences in a nightmarish realm like never before.

Meanwhile Joey is haunted by dreams of her father who died in Vietnam as they start to investigate the origins of the mysterious box. Things I’ve never seen before, the blue of Clare Higgins gorgeously murderous eyes are all the more startling, as is the smashed in face of her first hammer kill victim.Brace yourself for the disturbing and visceral imagery that has terrified audiences for decades, now reawakened on the big screen with unparalleled clarity and precision. The fine patterns on Andrew Robinson’s shirt as he takes possession of the house in the first film’s opening moments to the grotty detail on the bodies that litter the floor of The Boiler Room in Hellraiser III, all now are rendered with a much-improved sense of detail, clarity and sharpness. However, there is something that can’t help but resonate with the public’s consciousness about the film’s antagonists and what they stand for – at once terrifyingly evil and wholly unknowable, yet rooted in what it means to be human, their being angels to some and devils to others is a notion we seem unable to shake.

In Hellraiser, hedonist Frank Cotton (Sean Chapman) thinks he has reached the limits of earthly pleasure.Europe's busiest forums, with independent news and expert reviews, for TVs, Home Cinema, Hi-Fi, Movies, Gaming, Tech and more. In 1987, Liverpudlian author turned film maker Barker unleashed Hellraiser on a very unsuspecting public, a public weaned at that time on generic slasher films populated with wise-cracking antagonists who did little but satisfy the repressed bloodlust of its mostly teenage audience. One of the most celebrated horror movies of the ‘80s (if not all time) is getting a 4K upgrade this fall thanks to the folks at Arrow Video. Normally the films we review here at 60MW are check discs, plain discs with none of the ‘extras’ such as the book included with this set.

For this set, the first four movies in the Hellraiser series — all featuring Doug Bradley as the Cenobite leader Pinhead — have been completely remastered from their original camera negatives by Arrow Films.and those filters always looked softer in comparison for the most part and remains so here, albeit with a slightly better handling of the underlying grain and detail. For more about Hellraiser 4K and the Hellraiser 4K Blu-ray release, see Hellraiser 4K Blu-ray Review published by Jeffrey Kauffman on November 3, 2023 where this Blu-ray release scored 4. Grain is present and resolved beautifully throughout (where the source allows of course), this being only the start of the significant improvements for the detail and colour grade of the films. But a mysterious puzzle box will take him further than he can possibly imagine, opening the doors to a dominion where pain and pleasure are indivisible and summoning the Cenobites, whose experiments in the higher reaches of experience will tear his soul apart. In my humble opinion this is one of the weaker films in the series and you would probably enjoy one of the first 5 films a lot more than this one.
