The major plot of the novel follows Pamela and Martin as they try to work through Martin’s mental blocks and PTSD to unlock his memories of the night, while also trying to rebuild their lives and potentially adopt a teenage girl before she ages out of the foster system.

Which brings me to another aspect I find troubling, that is the depiction of mental health and its treatment, another area where it's probably true to say we are now more aware of sensitivities around turning mental health issues into fodder for crime novels. Hij is in de war en ze proberen, door middel van hypnose, hem weer terug naar het bewuste moment te brengen. Detective Joona Linna gets involved and when another girl goes missing, he fears a killer is escalating his activities. From the 17 million copy global bestseller Lars Kepler comes the darkest, most chilling crime thriller of 2022 - perfect for fans of Jo Nesbo, Ragnar Jonasson, and Alex North's The Whisper Man .Saga appears exactly twice in The Mirror Man, once during the epilogue to set up the next book, and has only one line of dialogue.

But, when a person from a certain minority group that doesn't have a lot of representation in popular culture, writing them as the villain isn’t really the thing to do. In the fiction, Joona is a fantastic detective, seeing things his coworkers and colleagues cannot, and often being key to solving the central mysteries.

Although it isn’t one of my top favorites in the series, I definitely think it would be a great one to start off with if you’re looking for your first Lars Kepler read! There is something ‘unputdownable’ about the books, perhaps related to the depravity the antagonist presents throughout. However, their greatest fears is bot her, but a man running the show, with a long history of psychiatric issues and who presents with a highly complex condition.

His mental illness is almost portrayed as an explicitly good thing in the context of the story, but the book still runs into the trouble that he is a mentally ill person who is a serial killer, even if he only engages in violence when sane. While Linna and the Swedish police begin trying to piece things together, Mia and her fellow captives are thrust into a world of torture and pain at the hands of a heinous woman. Fast forward a few years later, and Jenny turns up dead, and the police’s only witness, Martin, who may be able to unlock the whole case, can’t remember anything from the night she was killed.
