Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released the film on DVD again (this time with an anamorphic transfer) and on Blu-ray Disc (for the first time) on August 26, 2008, as a two-disc digitally remastered "collector's edition", but still containing the same special features. Since its original release in 1993 as the first full-length stop-motion animated film, The Nightmare Before Christmas has become an enduring cult classic. On the DVD: This edition is a must for all Burton fans with the biggest gem to be found on a DVD release--"Tim Burtons Early Films" which holds his first two works. Chris Sarandon (speaking voice) and Danny Elfman (singing voice) as Jack Skellington, a skeleton known as the "Pumpkin King" of Halloween Town.

The Nightmare Before Christmas was originally going to be released under Walt Disney Pictures as part of the Walt Disney Feature Animation lineup, but Disney decided to release the film under the studio's adult-oriented Touchstone Pictures banner, because the studio thought the film would be "too dark and scary for kids," Selick remembered. A 168-card Munchkin Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas-themed Munchkin was developed by USAopoly featuring the citizens of Halloween Town such as Jack Skellington, Oogie Boogie, Doctor Finkelstein, and Lock, Shock and Barrel. While initially a modest box office hit, it has since garnered a large cult following and is widely regarded as one of the greatest animated films of all time. Vincent” (5:50), made in 1982, features the same animation technique as Nightmare, and is very similar in style. On November 26, 2020, a novel retelling of the film version was released as part of the Disney Animated Classics series. Walt Disney Pictures president David Hoberman believed the film would prove to be a creative achievement for Disney's image, elaborating "we can think outside the envelope. The full title is Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas , which should give you an idea of the tone of this stop-action animated musical/fantasy/horror/comedy. On Halloween night, while meandering through the woods, he comes across a portal to an entirely different land . Finally, when Jack is delivering presents in the 'Real World', everything is plain, simple and perfectly aligned.

A lot of it probably had to do with the hype surrounding it, perhaps putting my expectations in over-drive (the insane number of Jack Skellington shirts at Hot Topic irritated me too). With dialogue that is largely sung and/or in rhyme, a marvellous Danny Elfman musical soundtrack, the look of the scenery, range/look of characters and the little details presented to us as the plot evolves is masterly; the quality of the animation is excellent. This product has both Blu-ray 'versions' in it, and (when compared to the Special Edition DVD I own) adds a new commentary track on the 3D disc, adding Tim Burton/Danny Elfman but removing director of photography Pete Kozachik; the 2D disc has all the other extras, a lot of which are also 'new'; if you have the 2-disc 'Collector's Edition' I believe there is little new content though. In 2017, Tokyopop secured exclusive licensing for two manga adaptions for Nightmare Before Christmas, with the first manga being an adaptation of the film's plot line, with art by Jun Asuka, released October 17.

The main characters of the film (except Santa Claus) appear as playable characters in the video game Disney Magic Kingdoms, as well as in some attractions based on locations of the film, in new storylines in which the characters are involved.
