About this deal

A 2015 international scientific consensus article notes that foods with a low glycemic index and load may help prevent and manage diabetes by improving glycemic control. Additionally, a 2019 review concluded that foods and beverages higher in these values might contribute to type 2 diabetes. United Kingdom [ edit ] History [ edit ] Former Shredded Wheat factory (left) in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, UK, in May 2017 Today, many companies, brand name and generic, make shredded wheat, using both the name and the design. While the original is still sold, by far the most popular today is a bite-sized version Kellogg’s sells with frosting on top. Aldi also sells that version. Shredded wheat generally scores “medium” on the glycemic index when eaten alone. However, when eaten with low-fat milk, it may be a low-glycemic food. The carbs in shredded wheat are digested somewhat slowly due to the high fiber content.

United States production of Shredded Wheat moved to Naperville, Illinois, in 1954, where it is still made. In 1993, Nabisco sold the brand to Kraft General Foods, but it was still under the Nabisco name until 1999, whereupon it was sold under the slogan "Nabisco brought to you by Post." Most cereals are high in carbs and sugar, both of which can raise blood glucose. Therefore, although people can enjoy certain cereals as an occasional treat, they may wish to consider low carbohydrate options to help manage diabetes.

Shredded wheat is made by many brands, as it is not a trademarked product. However, the ingredients are mostly the same. In the U.S., the most popular brand is Post, so we’ll be looking at that one. Shredded wheat is not fortified with vitamins or minerals. At least the Post brand isn’t (it could vary by brand). But this is fine, as fortified foods are not the best way to get all your vitamins and minerals anyway. If you want more vitamins, add some fruit to your shredded wheat. To me, the research on BHT does not look that concerning—it seems fine—but some people may want to research it more or avoid it. Sugar-frosted cornflakes are high in sugar and low in fibre as well as usually coming with added salt. Sugar-frosted flakes are usually nutritionally similar to other sweetened cereals like chocolate rice cereals, or honey-nut coated cereals.Swapping to an unsweetened equivalent, like cornflakes or puffed rice, would be a good first step and add a serving of fruit for one of your five- a-day plus some added sweetness.

The Kellogg brothers weren’t done, though. They created their own version of shredded wheat, even to the point of using the name. The National Biscuit Company sued, with the case landing in front of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1938. In that case — Kellogg Co. v. National Biscuit Co.— the highest court in the United States ruled that the original patent had expired and that “shredded wheat” was a generic term that couldn’t be trademarked. Wholegrain cereals like bran flakes, malted wheat cereal and wheat biscuits are high in fibre and will also have sugar and salt added to them usually, so avoid adding any more sugar and opt for fruits or berries for sweetness. The wholegrains mean they are high in fibre and so have benefits for your digestion too as well as your heart health.Related post: How to Sweeten Oatmeal Without Sugar (18 Healthy Ways).] 11. Is It Ok to Eat Shredded Wheat Every Day?

I have been going slightly nuts managing 3 children with distance learning, full time work, and some side jobs I took on. It has not been easy folks. Some days, I do not even know how I get the strength to do what needs to be done. Four cereals were both very tasty and very nutritious based on calories, fat, sodium, sugars, iron, calcium, and fiber: Kellogg's All-Bran Original, Post Grape-Nuts The Original, Post Shredded Wheat Original Spoon Size, and Post Shredded Wheat Wheat 'n Bran Spoon Size.

Fiber-rich cereals have made progress on the road to tastiness. Fourteen years ago, Consumer Reports found that most high-fiber cereals "tasted more like straw than grain." But in our latest tests of 26 cereals, most with at least 6 grams of fiber, more than two-thirds tasted very good or better. Our testers have advice on how to get the best for breakfast: Shredded wheat is free of added sugar. This is very uncommon for cereal nowadays. Even relatively healthy cereals like Cheerios and Weetabix have some sugar—but not shredded wheat. Does this make shredded wheat a low-glycemic food? We’ll cover that below. Kelloggs introduced Frosted Mini-Wheats in the United States in 1969 as a large size portion that was available in regular and brown sugar/cinnamon flavor, later followed by a bite-size portion introduced in 1980. The original large size Mini-Wheats was renamed "Big Bite" by 2001 and discontinued entirely in 2015. In 1999, Kellogg's went into the line by introducing a non-frosted Mini-Wheats variety that contained raisin filling, replacing Raisin Squares. It was discontinued in two years. Frosted Wheats were available from the 1980s until the early 1990s in the United Kingdom under the Toppas name. They subsequently disappeared from shop shelves but were reissued several years later under the Frosted Wheats brand, similar to that used elsewhere in the world. The new cereal uses far smaller pieces of frosted wheat parcel than the original Toppas and contains beef gelatin. Initially Kellogg's Mini-Wheats were available without the sugar frosting and with raisins or blueberries in the center. The Mini-Wheats recipe when produced in Canada or the United States was slightly different. Since January 2008, Canadian-produced (plant in Belleville, Ontario) Mini-Wheats are available in Canada and are imported into the US. Opting for oatmeal: Oatmeal, or porridge, is an excellent high fiber alternative to cold cereal. A topping of cinnamon or fresh fruit can add more flavor. Mixing in nuts or nut butter can also help people feel fuller for longer. However, it is important to avoid the highly processed instant oatmeal with lots of added sugar and choose a low sugar variety. Shredded wheat is very different from most cereals. While most cereals are loaded with sugar and processed grains, most brands of shredded wheat have just one ingredient: Whole wheat. That sounds pretty healthy. But is it really?

Frosted Mini-Wheats are marketed in several ways. There was a short stint of television advertisements featuring a Frosted Mini-Wheat biscuit with "split personalities;" the sweet (frosted) side and wheat (shredded grain) side, who argued over who was more popular. When the new MyPyramid debuted, launching the whole grain craze, Frosted Mini Wheats enjoyed another short-lived advertising stint as a fiber-conscious cereal. These advertisements involved a man walking around, asking "Have you had your fiber today?", then handing unsuspecting, confused people a bowl of the cereal. However, these ads have been discontinued. Meanwhile, in the early/mid-1990s, several ads aired showcasing conflict between children raving about the frosting and adults raving about the whole grain wheat. The best-known of these, " The Kid in You" ads, feature adults turning into children and kids turning into adults (actress Marcia Wallace appears in one of those "Kid in Us" spots, and one used the famous line from When Harry Met Sally..., "I'll have what she's having", which was said by an elderly woman sitting next to a young businesswoman who turned into a 13-year-old girl in front of her). Dietary cholesterol only comes from animal products like meat and eggs. So, plant-based foods (like 100% whole wheat cereals, including shredded wheat) do not have cholesterol.History [ edit ] United States and Canada [ edit ] Shredded Wheat factory in Niagara Falls, New York, circa 1905 In 2009, Kelloggs introduced a "Little Bites" spinoff of the Mini-Wheats brand. This version had smaller squares and came in three flavors: Original, Chocolate, and Honey Nut. Eventually, the Honey Nut flavor was taken off of shelves and replaced with Cinnamon Roll, which was also short-lived. For a ready to eat cereal that is an even more heart-healthy start to the day, swap for a shredded whole wheat cereal or no added sugar or salt muesli (see above) as these don’t contain any added sugar or salt. In their defense, Weetabix cited a study in which their cereal scored 47 on the glycemic index when eaten with semi-skimmed milk. (Any score below 55 is “low.”) However, if you eat Weetabix by itself, it scores “medium” on the glycemic index.( source)
