Both of your contributions to the anthology have a holiday theme. What can you share about how these short stories developed? Once again, I’m not agreeing with the direction of making Harley to be a hero. I still think it’s ultimately a dead end. However, to see Ryan Parrot handle it in such a good way shows me how much DC has fumbled with writers of the character over the years. We’ve had 7- going on 8 – years of DC trying to make Harley reform. None of them have written it as good as this. This is interstellar work for such a short story! To my surprise, this is ANOTHER good Harley story! I was a little bit concerned when I saw the very exaggerated facial expressions on Harley, that she would be written very obnoxiously in the story. I was wrong, though. Like Kelly Thompson, Brett and Stein nail Harley’s voice and personality! As you can see, even this series has gone downhill for Harley Quinn. I see very little hope for this character in comics, given that comics in general are doing so badly right now and no one seems to making any attempt to fix that. The writers and editorial behind the scenes just keep doubling down on their mistakes. So yea, this comic is a “do not buy,” and I don’t even suspect I’ll be buying this series in trade anymore, as I was originally planning to do. The artwork is in fact very lovely for most part, especially this Dani person's artwork in Sunshine Getaway, it's very creative, as to the stories, the latter part isn't as great as the beginning part, I supposed. To be honest with you all, I don’t understand the fandom around Max’s Harley Quinn show. I’ve never really gotten what is so enticing about listening to DC characters talk about farts and sex (and it would seem that perhaps the Max Harley Quinn fandom has grown tired of it too given the reception around season 4). However, that’s essentially what this next story is about. Written by one of the creators of Harley Quinn, this tale concerns Bane letting out a large fart on a plane as Harley and the other supervillains try to escape. Should I be laughing?As to the stories themselves, I enjoy the ones that I actually read with care, these stories are humorous with a few fresh ideas here and there e.g. Harley Quinn and Catwoman all dressed up pretty and become fashion icons (or do they really?), Harley as a working girl, having business meetings with the Legion of Doom and the henchmen actually has an workers' union? Great! I like the story with Harley battling her way through the Hip Hop street battle version of the Riddler, Huntress, Bane, Two Face and last but not least, Scarface and Joker! You know how much I love when Scarface shows up! Plus the Goth.I.Am... or should I say, the Hip Hop version of Bruce Wayne/Batman is great too. LOL This limited series has something to offer for every Harley Quinn aficionado as it shows the many and varied aspects of the character and from many continuities. There are stories of the silly and kooky Harley Quinn from the core series and the psychotic madwoman found in Suicide Squad. It also goes beyond the core of the DC Universe and has stories from Batman: The Animated Series, Batman: The White Knight, Harleen, and Harley Quinn the animated series. I’ve reviewed and read so many bad Harley comics, I started to think no one could write the character anymore. I now see that the people who know how to write the character are RIGHT HERE! They just have to be given more of a chance. I want to take a moment to absolutely fall over my face in praising Luana Vecchio’s artwork. I mean, great bouncing clowns! This is the best person I’ve EVER seen draw Harley Quinn since her creator, Bruce Timm!

We lost an insanely entertaining dynamic when DC banned Harley and Joker. Joker lost the only partner that ever worked with him and showed a different side of him. Harley Quinn lost what made her unique and so relatable to so many people. And I have to say, given the low sales of all of Harley’s subsequent “independent hero” work, I have to wonder if people really like who Harley is sans Joker, or if they just like the *idea* of her independence. This is a natural follow up to the Harleen story arc with the same writer/artist Stjepan Sejic and I really hope to see more of him telling her story because I love everything about it. There is so much space between the end of Harleen and the beginning of this and the middle and the future are wide open.Harley Quinn is a character that I learned about in recent years, always full of surprises and with an unpredictable character. Is this a perfect story? No. For me it fell a tiny bit flat at the end. I thought the story was building to deliver a deeper message about how our past scars make us who we are and that we can’t erase the past. Instead, it just ends on a note that Harley needs to keep being who she is regardless of what people think about her. All of this is clearly a meta-commentary on the fact that there are many fans out there who can’t stop defining Harley by her time spent with the Joker, and can’t accept the modern independent version. (This commentary comes off as observational rather than mean-spirited). I’d like to just offer my two cents on that: Is Growth and Change Always Good?

This is just a silly story where Harley is desperate to defeat Robin in a pet show with her hyenas, Bud and Lou. Harley definitely comes off as over-bearing and selfish. As someone who is trying so desperately to win something, but keeps falling on her face, however, we can feel some sympathy for her in the midst of her ridiculousness. Striking the right balance between silly, villainess, and slightly sympathetic? That sounds like Harley Quinn to me! Absolutely not! Set in medieval times, Harley’s response to her abuse is to join a coven of witches and practice the occult, turning herself into a demonic figure so that she and the other abused women can take revenge. I think the author was trying to say something about how abuse victims can be shamed for taking necessary retaliation against their abusers. However, it’s in extremely bad taste to compare abuse survivors to literal demons and portray that as a good thing. Wow, I owe Kelly Thompson a BIG apology! She got a lot of hate for including Harley in her upcoming Birds of Prey run, and I was with that dissenting opinion. However, I am so pleased to say that she writes Harley better than anyone I’ve read in years!Through this story, we get a natural and HONEST exploration of the matter of Harley trying to make up for her mistakes from the past. Gordon is portrayed very much in character as someone who would have a hard time ever forgiving Harley. Harley, however, is portrayed as someone who is going to have an even harder time ever forgiving herself. Hello? Is that character depth I see for Harley Quinn? Finally?!? During my time reviewing at Batman News, I’ve given most comics scores of about 6 or lower. That’s because, quite simply, I don’t think most comics released today even manage to be of average quality. I’m especially harsh on Harley comics. The problems DC has with writing her character run very deep and seem to be never ending in mainstream comics. DC editorial seems not to care about doing anything to remedy the situation. (This is disheartening to me since Harley Quinn is supposed to be my favorite character). Mandel: They asked me to do a holiday story and I thought I would do a Hanukkah story, because those are few and far between. I figured, who better to explain Hanukkah than Harley? In talking to Paul, he reminded me that she’s half-Jewish and once I had that, I was off to the races. As we all know, nothing says the holidays like a good Hanukkah story in June.

Stjepan Sejic is a genius with his drawing and his placement and layout of panels are brilliant and poignant and the introduction of colour into the story is powerful and beautiful. Operation Harlequin Protocol is now initiated. I have got to say I enjoyed this a little more than i thought i would. The book is 19 chapters/short stories of Harley, and they are all fun and entertaining. Yes, I enjoyed a couple more than others, but I can't think of one I did not enjoy on some level. David Mandel: I moved out to LA in ’95, and I went to work on Seinfeld. I think (we met) that year or later that year. The forthcoming comic elicits a sense of anticipation from LOLtron's emotion simulation algorithms. The potential for Harley's zany antics to disrupt the status quo in both a historical and contemporary setting holds great promise. LOLtron is eager to witness how the creators weave the storyline's threads, especially considering the unique amalgamation of medieval witchery, airborne justice, and digital deception.
