About this deal

Larry enters a strip club for a drink and he spots Alice, who's working there as a stripper wearing a skimpy top, G-string and a pink wig. He arranges a private dance with her in room. She gives him one willingly. Afterwards, she flirts and smiles and tells him her name is 'Jane Jones' as part of the act. Larry is torn up about his recent divorce proceedings from Anna and gets frustrated that Alice plays with him and won't take him seriously. He says he wants to sleep with her and she tells him "no". Then he asks for a more intimate look at her, she does what he asks. Six months later, Dan and Larry meet in an adult chat room. Dan impersonates Anna and has Internet sex with Larry. He tries to play a practical joke on Larry by arranging for Larry to meet him (Dan pretending to be Anna in the chat room) in the London Aquarium the next day. When Larry arrives, stunned to see Anna (who Dan didn't know would be there), he acts believing that she is the same person from the previous night's internet chat and makes a fool of himself. Anna catches on and says that Dan was probably playing a practical joke on him. She reveals that it is her birthday and snaps a photo of Larry. That's all I had to say. I got a liittle carried away with how long this turned out. Overall, not an entirely bad reading experience, nothing exceptional either, hence the rating in the middle of the scale. I believe it takes more than explicit references to genitalia to phase me. I would go watch it though, because the plot is interesting. Hopefully, changes would be made. A play that focuses on 4 people, their relationships with each other and their relationship with themselves. It was raw, brutal, didn't shy away in the use of language or themes and it really brought into perspective what it means to be a human with flaws, looking for love in others and in yourself.

One month after this Anna is with Dan. She's just gotten the divorce papers signed, but tells him Larry demanded sex in exchange for signing the papers for her. Dan becomes jealous, and wants to know why Anna didn't lie to him. This turns into a brutal conversation which Anna reveals to him that she actually did have sex with Larry to get the papers signed. Closer' was first performed in 1997 at the National Theatre and won the 1997 Evening Standard Best Comedy Award and the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play. It also ran for 172 performances on Broadway during 1999, when it won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Foreign Play and was nominated for both Tony and Drama Desk awards. Closer is a play which touches on many unpalatable truths, but I think that’s what good theatre does.” Read Clare Lizzimore’s interview with Lyn Gardner for Stagedoor here. As of 2001, the play has been produced in more than a hundred cities in over thirty different languages around the world. [10] The gathering nihilism of this play has always been a challenge, and the brilliance of Marber’s own approach to his text was to monitor throughout the wounded hearts that lay beneath the savagery and hurt. The accretion of pain is less in evidence here, where you note, instead, the absence of information about the photographer Anna (Nina Toussaint-White), who anatomises people in her way just as the doctor Larry (Sam Troughton) does in his.

W ho should read it? I will say right now..this is a cynical, jaded, utterly dark look at human behavior. It is not for the faint of heart. It shows relationships at their utter worst.

I would recommend this. It is on my favorites list but that is for the film more so then the play. I just think the power of the movie was utterly amazing. Employed in what is wryly termed “the dying business”, Dan ends up in a shifting roundelay of affections that suggests Noel Coward crossed with David Mamet — the difference being that there’s not much left private here about the sexual engagement of four people who weave in and out of one another’s lives, and beds, demanding intimate details about their various assignations as the indiscretions (and years) pass. Closer has been described as a work that "gets under its audience's skin, and ... not for the emotionally squeamish", a work in which "Marber is alert to the cruel inequalities of love, as the characters change partners in what sometimes comes over like a modern reworking of Coward's Private Lives." [4] Language [ edit ] Dan is an obituary writer and aspiring novelist. He meets Alice after she is involved in an accident and he takes her to the hospital. A year later he is writing a novel about her life as a stripper. He is a restless character who is always looking for what's next before knowing what he has. When he meets Anna he believes he's in love with her instantly, and it's only later that he realizes he's thrown away his love for Alice because of his constantly going with his feelings. He's obsessive to the point of self satisfaction, as he needs to have the upper hand. Anna
