Here is what he has to say about the GOAT’s signature tyre.

Put an Assegai on the front of your bike and then ride all year, in any conditions, on any trails and it will grip for miles and give you maximum confidence. The end. They really are that good. However, if you want a bit more detail, then read on… The initial setup of the Assegai tires was a breeze – the days of wrestling with massive metal tires levers and giving yourself a hernia trying to get a tire to seat are hopefully a thing of the past now that folding bead DH tires are becoming more common. The tires were set up tubeless, and mounted to a set of rims that had an internal width of 31mm, with 19 psi in the front and 20 psi in the rear. What does Ben make of the signature tyre of the most successful downhill rider out there? Here’s his two pence on the Maxxis Assegai. No matter what conditions I rode the tires in, I felt a great amount of grip, control, and predictability. I would say the grip and predictability of the Assegai are what is most impressive. You can push this tire extremely hard in 90% of trail conditions while having the same breaking point every time. ” –Worldwidecyclery.com, June 2019

In pretty much every circumstance they have been predictable, confidence-inspiring and dependable. The Assegai would be my tyre of choice if I was building a bike and wanted a tyre to run all year in the UK.”–WideOpenMountainBike.com, September 2020 You might look at the tall side knobs and assume that they might fold over under heavy cornering, but this was not the case. They are sturdy enough to support the hardest of riders and have enough depth to really penetrate all but the sloppiest conditions. As you lean in, they really begin to bite and they reward an active rider who can maximise the cornering potential of such an aggressive tyre.

Tubeless Ready (TR) tyres provide the rider with many benefits: the ability to run lower air pressures, which improves traction; lower rolling resistance when compared to a tube-type tyre; and less chance of flatting since there is no tube. Put an Assegai on the front of your bike and then ride all year, in any conditions, on any trails and it will grip for miles and give you maximum confidence. The end. They really are that good. Already around 1k km on this tyre. I´m using it on my Nordest Bardino 2.0 hardtail on the rear, the grip is excellent under any conditions, even more in wet and muddy as is normal here in Ireland. Planning on buying another one for front.” Liquid sealants should only be used in the following types of tyres: Tubeless Road, tubular, and tubeless Ready. The use of liquid sealants in any other Maxxis tyre will void the warranty. Compound

Some of the best aspects of various tyres such as the DHF, DHR 2 and even the original High Roller have been combined to make this monster of a tyre that excels in all areas - other than fast rolling. If you are looking for that then this likely isn't the tyre for you. This is the kind of tyre that is going to do it's best to find grip anywhere! Somehow Maxxis have managed to pull out the best traits of their most popular tires to create something entirely different, yet very familiar at the same time. My initial impressions are all positive – this is an aggressive, grippy, and incredibly predictable tire” –Mike Kazimer, PinkBike.com, April 2018

While this tyre may not make you ride quite like Greg Minnaar, it's going to absolutely rip up those downhill runs with more grip than you ever thought possible. Our EXO+ construction combines two of our best puncture protection materials: SilkShield and EXO. The SilkShield layer runs from bead-to-bead with a layer of EXO along the sidewalls. Combined, these two materials create EXO+ which improves tread puncture protection by 27%; sidewall durability by 51%; and resistance to pinch flats by 28%. Tyre Construction I just got mine after listening to my friend go on and on about how much he loves his Assegai. He’s had it for a year, and it still has lots of life, and cornering and grip are both significantly improved. In the meantime, I keep wearing through Schwalbe tires. So…I’m switching the DH bike over to Assegai front and rear, and the enduro over to Assegai front and something else rear. Only downside: They’re heavy.” For trail and enduro riding you can’t beat pairing them up with the new Dissector or the classic DHRII on the rear. Like all Maxxis, they are expensive, but you get what you pay for.Tires reviewed are the Maxxis Minion DHF and DHR II, both size 27.5 x 2.8. Our boy Jason Peterson had been waiting some time for these tires to be released – he was looking for new meats that could charge hard and resist the punctures and tears that he had experienced in some other plus-size tires. Let’s hear his thoughts on these bad boys.
