The Grasshopper 380 motor: 10T/0.8 mod -standard fit is pressed/shrunk onto motor shaft; 540 motor: 18T/0.8 mod; mad brushless: use 10T midnight pumpkin / lunchbox 10T/0.8mod gear & gearbox fittings (Thanks Jonny Retro) The classic California style Holiday Buggy has been brought bang upto date buy mounting it on the proven DT-02 2WD chassis. The Grasshopper (re-re) - 380 motor: 10T/0.8 mod -standard fit is pressed/shrunk onto motor shaft; 540 motor: 18T/0.8 mod; mad brushless: use 10T midnight pumpkin / lunchbox 10T/0.8mod gear & gearbox fittings (Thanks Jonny Retro)

We are nearly finished on the chassis now. Here the wheels and tyres are attached. They are assembled in the box, just bolt them on as instructed! Don’t forget to grease the front avles as shown though… The Hornet 18T, 0.8mod; mad brushless motors: use 10T midnight pumpkin / lunchbox 10T/0.8mod pinion & gearbox fittings (Thanks Jonny Retro) Here the rest of the detail parts such as the spot lights and jerry cans are painted up and attached to the body. As Tamiya TS paints are currently unavailable in the UK, I used Halfords Ford Electric/Monza Blue for the roof panel.Durable front double wishbone suspension offers smooth movement. Grooved front tires enable superb handling. The DT-02 bathtub chassis has its battery loaded in the centre for ultimate weight distribution and balance. The gearbox is completely enclosed to protect it from interference by dirt and debris. With 4 wheel independent suspension, it displays excellent handling even on rough surfaces. wheel double wishbone suspension is equipped with coil spring damped units to provide superb off-road traction. The Holiday Buggy 2010 is powered by a 380 sized motor, just like the original kit from 30 years ago. Here the motor is attached to an adaptor plate and also the gearbox spur gear is assembled onto its shaft. How many of us have watched the video with the Holiday Buggy and Sand Rover on the beach chasing after one another? I always thought that was pretty cool. The following winter, I had the opportunity to go to Florida with my Dad on a trip. So decided to take my Holiday Buggy along. I raced it up and down the beach just like the Tamiya video. However when the day was over and the time came to clean the buggy up, I could not believe just how much sand made it in between the gears. The car never ran the same, until I replaced the plastic gears with new ones. They never show you the gearbox in the video. Hmmm….

I don't think this is something to really look for in a Holiday Buggy. If you consider buying a used one, I'd pay attention to the chassis: It may have got the front spring mounts broken. I think this goes for the 'roll bar' and front bodymount as well. Also look for items as the speed controller, origional tires and wheels, body, driver and jerricans on the side. The bumper is a very desireable item on this car: because it shares this part with the 'Racing Buggies' they tend to cost as much as the rest of the car. Keep in mind these are beginners car and these tend to be driven around many things, and especially INTO things. And you mostly hit things with the front first: bye-bye bumper! Most of them will be in bad shape for this reason. Now for the rear end. The sub-assembly is fixed to the main chassis with six screws, again countersunk on the underside. It’s really starting to come together now! To celebrate the30th anniversaryof this iconic models first appearance, Tamiya have re-released the Holiday Buggy on the modern DT-02 chassis. The cars friction dampers mean that it bounces a lot on rough ground, just like the original but the good thing is that the 2010 version is a whole load stronger! For example, I had a middle period RC10 with an 81T spur gear, with a diameter (across the lands) of 1.63" - which gives a pitch, thanks to my not very accurate measurement, of 49.5 - close enough to 48dp. THIS KIT INCLUDES UPGRADED 3300MAH BATTERY, FAST MAINS CHARGER and SUPER STRENGTH METAL GEARED SERVO! When many heard of the Holiday Buggy’s re-release there was excitement and disapproval in seemingly equal measure from Tamiya fans. Some vintage collectors liked the fact that they could have a retro styled basher on a modern chassis which was well priced and easy to get bits for. Others just abhorred the fact that it wasn’t on the original chassis… There are plenty of small parts that need painting on the Holiday Buggy. The driver figure needs painting but the head and hat come pre-finished. The paint finish here is good but the drivers face has a brown wash over it making him look like he’s been snuffling for truffles…

The bathtub type frame chassis features a longitudinal battery layout for lower center of gravity and optimum weight distribution. Gear pitch will be one of two types imperial (diametral pitch, aka diametrical pitch, dp or simply pitch) - mostly found on US and UK made cars - e.g. Associated & Mardave; or metric - module or mod - mostly found on Japanese made cars - e.e Tamiya.

MOTORS

R/C fans will definately rejoice when they see this nostalgic body shape and relive the fun with the modern mechanics.

Tamiya seem to be on a big run of re-releases lately. In addition to the Buggy Champ and Sand Scorcher which have come out on their original chassis, I currently have sitting around my desk here at Racer, four recent kits – all of which the bodyshells have been seen on other chassis before!Rear mounted type 380 motor offers a manageable power output. The sealed gearbox is equipped with differential gears. Holiday Buggy 2010 (DT-02 chassis) - standard is 10T 0.8mod pressed on 380 motor (Tamiya part # 17435039 or 7435039), 540 motor upgrade uses 17T 0.8mod (tamiya part # 3515005) - thanks Jonny Retro
