However, above all it set the ball rolling for me to look for deeper truths than the ones conventionally provided by society. So, it had extra-literary consequences, and it is not many books that do that. (This is why I can't be objective and can't simply consider the book as a literary creation.) This is one of those books which changed forever the way I conceived of social science - and life, indeed, to the extent that I spend my time thinking about and living in society. Tuxedomoon's third single was titled "The Stranger" and was reworked in 1981 as "L'étranger (Gigue existentielle)" for the Suite en sous-sol EP. The lyrics to both versions include direct references to the protagonist's mother's death and the expectation that he cry at her funeral. [23] It began being published in English from 1946, first in the United Kingdom, where its title was changed to avoid confusion with the translation of Maria Kuncewiczowa's novel of the same name; after being published in the United States, the novella retained its original name, and the British-American difference in titles has persisted in subsequent editions. The Stranger gained popularity among anti-Nazi circles following its focus in Jean-Paul Sartre's 1947 article "Explication de L'Étranger ". [2] The Outsiders is a dramatic and enduring work of fiction that laid the groundwork for the YA genre. S. E. Hinton's classic story of a boy who finds himself on the outskirts of regular society remains as powerful today as it was the day it was first published. " The Outsiders transformed young-adult fiction from a genre mostly about prom queens, football players and high school crushes to one that portrayed a darker, truer world." — The New York Times

Raymond Sintès is a neighbour of Meursault who beats his Arab mistress. Her brother and friends try to take revenge. He brings Meursault into the conflict, and the latter kills the brother. Raymond and Meursault seem to develop a bond, and he testifies for Meursault during his trial. Now, this might not sound precisely like enjoyable holiday reading, but once you open this book and begin to grasp its central idea, I defy you not to be hooked! Wilson takes your mind to new limits, demolishing mental walls as if they did not exist, in such a way that you can never look at mundane existence in quite the same way again. Avenged Sevenfold's first single " Nobody" from Life Is But A Dream... was inspired by The Stranger. [24]When I was in tenth grade, I read The Outsiders for the first time. The story was boring, and I didn’t connect with the characters. The Outsider is great. Much of the book are things that any serious reader will say the very not so serious comment of 'duh' to, and there is the sense of 'preaching to the converted' (although there is no preaching here), but that's ok with me since a good portion of my life has been being submersed in subcultures that preach to the converted believing that their words just might be able to transcend the actual audience to an audience that needs to hear the message (for the record I just thought this now at 11:22 AM on Sunday January 20th, 2008, and I wish I had thought it sometime ten years ago to counter a lukewarm review I had received from MRR for the eighth issue of my zine. A review that had accused me of preaching to the converted.). But anyway, this book could only have been produced by an 'outsider' himself. Someone standing on the edges of popular and academic writing, but not entrenched in either camp at all.

Salamano is an old man who routinely walks his dog. He abuses it but is still attached to it. When he loses his dog, he is distressed and asks Meursault for advice. He testifies at Meursault's trial. So this was my first time reading “The Outsiders” and I really don’t get why our teachers never forced us to read THIS book at school! I’m convinced my teenage me wouldn’t only have approved but also would have enjoyed it immensely and I’m kinda sad I had to discover this book so late. Well, my school system obviously failed but that definitely didn’t stop me from reading “The Outsiders” and I’m very glad about it. overall a helpful and stimulating read, but conclusions may be dramatically different in our day and age :) That something is or is not deviant is, it should go without saying, often very controversial. It is sufficient to point out that at the time Outsiders was published in 1966, "homosexuals" were openly categorized under the same line of inquiry - "deviance studies" - as cannabis users, jazz musicians, and "juvenile delinquents". Social categories, and societal moral evaluations of them, shift over time and space, demonstrating their volatility to active interference and manipulation. Indeed, one need only look at the impact of data-marketing agencies in the past several elections worldwide on directing (or diverting) the focus of public debate/anger at this or that out-group to see how categories are 'arbitrarily' created and maintained by actual, living people with conscious purposes in mind.

The novel was first mentioned in an interview for USA Today on August 7, 2017. [3] The book cover was first revealed on January 18, 2018. [4] An excerpt was published in the May 25, 2018, issue of Entertainment Weekly. [5] Reception [ edit ] Hinton, S.E. (1971). That Was Then, This Is Now. New-York: Penguin Group. pp.43–64. ISBN 978-0-14-038966-1. You could see The Outsider as King’s take on fake news, moving it from the political realm to something more personal. Lies being sold as truth: what form could that concept take?

Then a lot of discussion is had about the state of sociology of the time as well, where it seems more research needs to be done. It is interesting how research is phrased about the upper echelon of the society - which is required and is hard to achieve; morally and practically.A stage musical based on both the novel and film has been in the works as of 2022 and is expected to hold its world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse in February/March 2023. The production will be directed by Danya Taymor from a libretto by Adam Rapp, with songs by Jamestown Revival and music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations by Justin Levine. [14] Museum and film locations Tramel, Jimmie (March 25, 2022). " 'The Outsiders' actor Matt Dillon tours Outsiders House Museum". Tulsa World. Archived from the original on May 15, 2022 . Retrieved March 26, 2022. Half way through the book, he starts to discuss how the theory projects and how these groups work against each other. To say it was a 'string' case , where one case is mirrored by another was interesting and reasonable to assume. This raises epistemological (and moral) questions of the social researcher's viewpoint, or language, adopted in her account of social reality. For instance, i) by describing the point of view of policemen, surely the researcher is vindicating their actions, overvaluing them over those of those who complain about such actions, such as drug users? ii) Should she then take up a scientifically detached stance uniquely distinct from and more objective than those of the subjects studied? A moral point is clearer in the first question, while an epistemological point is raised when considering the second.
