Are there any other ways I can extend the onion’s shelf life if I do not have a pressure canner at home? There are actually a few reasons to can onions, beyond the depredations of an overzealous kindergartener. Load your jars into the water bath canner. Put the lid on and return the cleaner to a rolling boil (you may need to add water if the water does not cover the tops of the jars). As your jars cool, be sure to leave plenty of room between them so they don’t bump into each other and break. You can remove the rings to use on another batch of jars if you’d like, but make sure you let the lids remain on the jars.
