About this deal

The management of the venue was proactive and keen to make improvements to ensure its customers were able to enjoy a night out safely. A total of 22 conditions were added to the licence which specified measures such as additional training requirements, the use of random searches and metal detection wands, as well as improvements to CCTV systems to ensure they were capable of providing pictures of evidential quality in all lighting conditions, particularly facial recognition. A condition was also added to the licence which required, where door supervisors are employed, that there was at least one male and one female door supervisor available, to enable them to undertake searches appropriate to the customers identified gender before gaining entry to the premises. Many licensed premises work incredibly hard to ensure that their customers can enjoy a night out safely and deter perpetrators. To support licensed premises, several industry associations produced a factsheet which includes recommendations and some resources for the hospitality sector on how to respond to and prevent spiking. The LGA would recommend that licensed premises: It depends on what you're drinking as to how easy this is, but if you can, always opt for a bottle rather than a glass. You can easily keep your thumb over the top to stop someone from slipping something in. If you are drinking from a glass, you can hold it from the top rather than the side. Review searching procedures and amend as necessary, as well as reviewing how often toilets are inspected, as victims of spiking have been found in there. Premises should also review the functionality of any CCTV and ensure it is not obscured. Support the public: Communicate routes for reporting unacceptable behaviour while using your service or space at night.

In an ideal world society would condition and teach its members, not to spike, and respect bodily agency and authority- and this is something we can all look towards. However, the supplying of Spikeys to bar’s customers is a good first step in terms of prevention.Initially, the police requested that the licensing authority revoked the premises licence, however they withdrew this request as they were satisfied with the co-operation they received from the venue management and the updated conditions on the licence. Once the conditions were agreed, the sub-committee reinstated the licence with the new conditions. Alcohol is most commonly used to spike drinks, either by adding some to a non-alcoholic drink or adding double instead of single measures.

Spike Aware UK aims to provoke action to prevent drink and needle spiking crime happening in the UK, including local and national campaigning. It also provides support to victims. Don't accept drinks from strangers. Even if someone you know or trust offers to buy you one, always go to the bar with them and watch it being made so you're confident it hasn't been tampered with before you get your hands on it. SENSITIVE CONTENT: This article contains several references to sexual assault and the spiking of drinks. Reader discretion is advised.

Communicate: Create positive, public/staff-facing communications campaign, both online and in your space(s). On Wednesday, we hostedan open conversation on student safety within Tommy’s Lounge. This wasan opportunity to have an honest discussion about safety on campus and within our venues and the action you wanted to see taken. Thank you to everyone who came down and got involved - following the conversation we'll be looking to build a working group, including students, to progress the initiatives discussed. Earlier this year a Home Affairs Committee Inquiry into spiking proposed several recommendations to bring improvements to the way spiking incidents are reported and investigated, one of which was to make spiking a separate offence, something which we wholeheartedly support. We offer resources and solutions that help people to stay safe, with a mission to raise awareness and ultimately stamp out spiking. We are very aware that the majority of our drinks are served in glasses/cups of some nature, and that in the past we have not had anti-spiking measures in place for these products – welcome Stoptopps! These are self-adhesive single-use foil lids that will fit onto any drinking vessel up to 100mm wide.Stoptopps are available on request from the bar for all poured and served drinks.
