The Speyside distillery of Pittyvaich, which opened in 1974, closed its doors in 1993 after only 18 years in operation making its former whiskies a rarity. The Port Dundas whisky has been combined with liquid from two further closed distilleries, Cambus and Brora. The whisky is then blended with rare Scotch from Cameronbridge, Glenkinchie, Clynelish, Dailuaine and Auchroisk. When compared with other Johnnie Walker blends, Ghost and Rare is not terribly elaborate in terms of the number of distilleries represented. In my opinion, this makes it all the more intriguing. Truth be told, I’ve never really been one to celebrate the marrying of malts and grains from dozens of distilleries into one bottle. When it comes to blends, less is often more–especially when “less” is of the highest quality.

Their slow maturation allows the sweet and delicate grain character to blossom,” master blender Emma Walker states in the release. “These rare whiskies highlight the distillery character of Port Dundas, perfectly showcasing the wonderful depth of flavor that this grain whisky brings to Johnnie Walker Blue Label. Its incredible character inspired us to create something truly extraordinary that pays proper tribute to the whisky makers of this storied Glasgow distillery.” Nestled among all of those aging casks are a number of whiskies from distilleries that are no longer with us, but their spirits remain. Dad jokes aside, these “Ghost” whiskies are understandably some of the most intriguing and sought after expressions. This leads us to Limited Edition Expressions. Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and has released four such limited editions so far and have included Ghost whiskies from Brora, Port Ellen, and Glenury Royal. The most recent release features Pittyvaich as the starring “ghost.” Perhaps Ghost and Rare is the closest you will ever come to drinking a “haunted” whisky. Can it be said, however, that a bottle of rare elixirs, taken from three “silent” distilleries, is worth a price tag of three to four hundred dollars? Good question. It’s worth reminding you that there are five other spirits in the blend, as well. Tasting notes include creamy wood notes, vanilla, soft smoke, spiced apples and aromas of peach and berries. The fifth edition in the series is Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Dundas, which explores the character of closed grain distillery Port Dundas in Glasgow.

Johnnie Walker’s Blue Label Ghost and Rare series continues its run with a new special release, this one built to showcase the grain whisky produced at Port Dundas, an iconic distillery in Glasgow that operated from 1811 to 2010. Port Dundas whiskies remain some of the oldest I’ve ever had the luxury of experiencing in person, in large part because grain whisky can be made cheaply and has enormous “staying power” in the barrel. Port Dundas was, in its day, one of the finest Grain Whisky distilleries in the world and the rare expressions that we have chosen from our reserves are some of the most distinctive it has ever produced. Her process consisted of multiple stages of AI to create 75 unique NFTs that capture the juxtaposition between the constant flow of water and the water tamed within each bottle of Ghost and Rare Port Dundas. Each of the 75 NFTs will differ, making them as rare as the whisky itself. Rounding out the blend are rarities from (operating) distilleries in Speyside: Mannochmore, Auchroisk, Cragganmore, and Strathmill, plus the Highland whisky of Royal Lochnagar.
