As it turns out, moving through the world in this way is ending up to be a huge relief. It takes the sour edge off everything. It restores me to my heart. The sense of what she was telling me was this: You can be kind of a difficult person, Marguerite. You can be emotionally needy… and harsh. None of this draws people to you. Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(32) If after the manner of men . . .--These words imply here, as elsewhere ( 1Corinthians 3:3), "merely from a human point of view." What is the advantage or necessity of my incurring daily risks, if I am merely a human being, with a life limited by what we see, and no immortality and resurrection awaiting me?

But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. Strong's 2046: Probably a fuller form of rheo; an alternate for epo in certain tenses; to utter, i.e. Speak or say. If we only live for now, and only live for ourselves, we’ve lost the meaning of life. How Should Christians Approach the Concept of YOLO and 'Eat, Drink, and Be Merry'? And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, …and I will say to my life, "'Life, you have ample possessions laid up for many years to come: take your ease, eat, drink, enjoy yourself.' Eat, drink and be merry – a 16th century feast Where does the saying “eat, drink, and be merry” originate? And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’

This article is part of our larger resource library of popular Bible verse phrases and quotes. We want to provide easy to read articles that answer your questions about the meaning, origin, and history of specific verses within Scripture's context. It is our hope that these will help you better understand the meaning and purpose of God's Word in relation to your life today. What good has it done me if, [merely] from a human point of view, I fought with wild animals at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised [at all], LET US EAT AND DRINK [enjoying ourselves now], FOR TOMORROW WE DIE. And behold, joy and gladness, killing oxen and slaughtering sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine. “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”

Ecclesiastes 8:15 teaches us to be joyful in all circumstances. In the midst of a miscarriage, a failed friendship, or job loss, the preacher would remind us that ‘there is a time for everything’ ( Ecclesiastes 3:18), and to experience the joy of God’s gifts despite the worlds teetering foundation. This is not a dismissal of our suffering or tragedy. God sees us in our pain and reminds us that He is with us ( Romans 8:38-39). Rather, this is an exhortation to simply be present in God’s gifts to humanity. Strong's 2181: Ephesus, a coast city, capital of the Roman province Asia. Probably of foreign origin; Ephesus, a city of Asia Minor. If I fought with animals at Ephesus for human purposes, what does it profit me? If the dead are not raised, then “let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.

The fact that we have tastebuds to enjoy rich coffee, sweet candied apples, and savory nachos is a gift. God grants us the time to enjoy the work of our hands, and the joy of sitting among old friends. For “every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of Heavenly lights” ( James 1:7). What Does the Bible Say about Enjoying Life? I’ve been praying with her, meditating with her, working with her to help me, and to help me bring her gifts of healing and spiritual awakening to others. The phrase appears in that way in the New Testament as well. In Luke 12: 19 Luke puts it into Jesus’ mouth. Jesus says in a parable “and I will say to my soul, Soul, thou has much goods laid up for many years; Take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.” it is doubtful though, that Jesus intended it in the way that Epicureans interpret it. What do Shakespeare’s characters have to say about eating and drinking? Then I'll say to myself, 'You have stored up enough good things to last for years to come. Live it up! Eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.'" The Merchant of Venice: Act1, Scene 1 Drink sir, is a great provoker of three things….nose-painting, sleep and urine. Lechery, sir, it provokes, and unprovokes; it provokes the desire but takes away the performance. Rather than allowing our anxieties and the pressures of this world to beat us down, Ecclesiastes 8:15 calls us to enjoy the simple gifts that God has given us despite our circumstances. Are We to 'Eat Drink and Be Merry' All the Time? And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.”’

And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry."’If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to-morrow we die. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."’ Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, as a current example, is an attempt to return Russia to the former Empire status of pre-1991, when the dissolution of the Soviet Union was in the process of internal disintegration. This resulted in the ending of the country’s, and federal government’s existence as a sovereign state, leading to its’ constituent republics, such as Ukraine and the Baltic States, gaining full sovereignty. Is this history being repeated, and God’s word perverted and ignored yet again? Lately, I have had something on my mind that has been driving me CRAZY and it all stems from Facebook. Don't get me wrong, I am an avid facebook member and enjoying seeing what is going on in people's lives that I care about. But my goodness, some people have taken it WAY TO FAR!!! I would have never thought Facebook would be a platform for people's ridiculous rants about the most controversial subjects. In my opinion, wrong forum!! I don't really care about Billy's opinion on...well on anything now that I think about it! I guess the biggest frustration for me is when someone posts about something that is truly controversial and then almost appears offended when people disagree or call them out on their comments. Uh, shouldn't that be expected?? Differing opinions are what makes this world go round! I know I can always hide this stuff or unfriend people but it is like a car accident...I can't take my eyes away from it! I have a feeling that as we get closer to the election, this is only going to get worse! I also don't like when people use Facebook ina hurtful way. I have a very great friend who has fallen victim to this and it makes me CRAZY! Not only did said person make her feel stupid, he really hurt her fellings as well!!! NOT COOL!! It is really easy to have a strong opinion on something from behind your computer. If you want people to respect you and your opinions, I suggest not posting them all over facebook! It makes you look immature and kind of silly!! If you want a platform to express your opinions...START A BLOG! What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
