Flying Scotsman, Whiff and Rajiv share the same body molds as Thomas, Gordon and Emily respectively. Belle's prototype models are exactly the same as Rosie's, and she has handrails on her roof for her 2019 re-release. The only exceptions for the former case are the prototypes of her Light-Ups and Monster variants. Presently, Iron 'Arry is the only Mini not to have a Classic model despite having a DC Super Friends™ variant. was the third year for the Minis range and Mattel released brand new Minis themes including: Steel, Construction, Aquatic, Night Time, Space, Monster and Animals, as well as new characters incorporated into the Classics theme. It was also the second year for the Tootsie theme (exclusive only to the US/Canada), as new additions were also announced. A new crossover theme was also announced for 2017, that being the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. For the first time, road vehicles were added to the range.

Classic Diesel 10 (for unknown reasons, Diesel 10 is in this wave and shares the same bag code as well as 2015/1) also saw a new wave of Minis introduced, and much like all current Thomas toy lines, the models aim to reproduce a design aesthetic based on the CGI series despite running alongside the Flash-animated reboot. A handful of new characters were introduced to the Classics line (Whiff, Rajiv, and Flying Scotsman), all of which are repaints of existing characters. The 24th was release in the later half of 2021. Classic Charlie is missing his brass fittings on the side of his smokebox, this was fixed on his Robo variant, but not on any other variant. Light Up Rosie was originally going to be made in her original livery, but the final product features her in her current one. Each engine in the blind bags has its own respective item code. This can be used to distinguish a particular model apart.In 2016, all of the blind bag codes were regenerated, restarting at Code: 01 ( excluding the 2017 series). Therefore, they have rail wheels, buffers and coupling hooks. The range was first produced in Thailand having weights inside. Some 2016/4 models continuing into 2017, the production moved to China onwards, removing the weights.
