Knowing the sequence of musical notes is basic to understanding how to play music. On a bass guitar, each note (including sharps, #, and flats, ♭ó) is one fret, or a half step, away from the note next to it. It’s totally okay that your playing sounds choppy when you’re first starting out, but if you keep at practice, you will soon find that your fingers are switching chord configurations with letter effort! Try to let that half note ring for as long as possible before making the jump, but don’t be late for beat 3! This mid-measure jump allows you to play the chorus of the second phrase an octave higher. The song doesn’t really do that, but this makes it more interesting. Plus it gives you a workout in different positions.

When you practice arpeggios, be sure to play them from low to high slowly, loudly, and deliberately at first to ensure you can play the notes cleanly. Then play them faster and lighter to produce the sound of arpeggios as they appear in real music. Tuning Apps When you’re feeling like your hands are getting tired, your fingertips are sore, or your wrists are starting to feel strained, take a break and listen to some music! Don’t worry- it’s totally normal for your fingers to hurt a bit. The problem that a lot of beginners run into when first starting to learn how to play is that they’re so excited to dive into playing music, that they often neglect to actually learn the parts and pieces that come together to make their guitar. You don’t have to start off learning the guitar by learning ‘Hot Cross Buns’ or ‘Happy Birthday’. The absolute most important part of playing the guitar is creating music that inspires you and motivates you, not creating the perfect technique, so start working on playing some of your favorite songs! Go with lighter gauge strings Metal slides, especially those made from brass, are heavier (they have more mass), bolder-sounding, and provide better sustain, but they're more difficult to master. Trying to learn to play at a really fast pace isn’t going to help build muscle memory or help your brain retain the information any longer. A great technique is about accuracy, which is something that you develop by playing at a slow tempo. When you learn to play properly, speed naturally follows along! You will only need a guitar cable if your guitar is an electric guitar, an electro-acoustic guitar (an acoustic guitar that can be amplified), or a bass guitar. In terms of cable length, I would recommend starting out with an instrument cable that is less than 20 feet, as a short cable will help to decrease signal and noise loss. Step two: Discover how to tune your guitar Watch the video and try playing the arpeggio. Learning a simple arpeggio is the foundation to mastering more complicated broken chords. Major arpeggio pattern #1 includes two out-of-position notes (notes that don’t fall within the four-fret span defined by the position and that require stretches by the 1st or 4th finger to play). They occur on the 6th and 1st strings. To play these notes, stretch your 4th finger up (toward the bridge) to play the note that occurs one fret higher than the one you would normally play. Instead, discuss with your teacher some goals that you want to achieve on your guitar journey, as that will help your teacher to get a better understanding of what success looks like to you! Don’t get me wrong, there are some channels on YouTube that do a really great job of breaking down guitar basics and music theory, but if you’re looking for someone to give you a concrete lesson that’s covers everything that you need to understand as a beginner, I would recommend also investing your money into a guitar teacher or a program.Even though it seems far more complicated than a 6 string guitar, we’re confident that with enough time and practice, you’ll agree that with a 12 string guitar, there’s simply more to love!
