About this deal

DF: I just hope they enjoy it; I’m so grateful for this opportunity and the chance to write for a company that has been a big part of my life for at least twenty years (man I’m old…). I think it will appeal to fans who like their sci-fi a little more low-key and character driven. Its tone is a little closer to Firefly than Star Wars.

Though an exceptional pilot, Shard is not the only hero in her family. Her parents were martyrs who served in the Imperial Guard, and her brothers and sisters are renowned servants of the Imperium, excelling in disparate roles. Though each sibling is an asset, the family’s greater value is as a propaganda tool. The von Shard line is idolised as exemplars of honour, sacrifice, and service to a higher cause. Simlex had previously served in the field with the noble Commissar Tobia von Shard, and it was his recommendation that saw him assigned to Bacchus. Unfortunately, Simlex discovers that Flight Commander Shard has little in common with her brother, and cares nothing for his approval. I can’t recall how many times I’ve read Catch 22 (teenage obsession exacerbated it being a set text a few years later), and as soon as I read that Outgunned was occurring in the Yossarian sub sector I was predisposed to enjoy the book. That sort of real-world nod can sometimes be too on-the-nose, but while Outgunned employs some of the same archetypes as Catch 22, it only recalls the spirit of the earlier book rather than retreading it. I’m telling the story through the eyes of an Imperial Propagandist, Flowers gives us a good outsider’s perspective not just on the conflict on Bacchus, but also on the realities of life in the military wings of the Imperium of Man as opposed to how Simlex and his colleagues present it. Simlex at least has the presence of mind to reevaluate the situation when presented with new evidence. Not all the characters in the novel share this trait. Ironically, this misplaced confidence is one of the reasons the situation is deteriorating, because taking proper steps to solve it would involve admitting that the current approach has failed. I read a lot on the train. All sorts of genres and authors; whatever I could find. One day I ran out of books but had some paper in my bag. I decided to try writing a story, which soon became a novel, and then became a completely different novel. I experimented with a variety of genres and formats and was wildly unsuccessfully, but kept trying.

Outgunned (Warhammer 40,000) - Flowers, Denny: 9781789994681

For a book labelled " A Lucille Von Shard Novel" it takes a surprising amount of time before she plays more than a passing role in this story, but it is none the worse for that. ToW: Without spoiling anything, who are the main characters and what do we need to know about them? Thematically it is a story about stories; the tall tales that are told throughout the Underhive, and what happens when myth meets reality. It is also a story about keeping your word, where most of the main characters are in some way bound by a promise or oath which may not be in their best interests. But honour is at stake, and even in the Underhive giving your word is taken very seriously. Iain M. Banks is my favorite Sci-Fi author of his time (though I love his non-genre fiction too), but my love of sci-fi really originated from reading comics as a kid, especially 2000AD. The blending of the horrible, humorous and bizarre with just a hint of satire is something I think carries forward in my own work. Denny Flowers: Outgunned is the story of Propagandist Kile Simlex’s attempts to produce a cinema-pict depicting the brave pilots of the Aeronautica Imperialis. Simlex has lofty aspirations for the pict, envisioning it as his magnum opus, featuring the fearless Flight Commander Lucille von Shard’s victory over craven ork invaders.

They say you should never meet your heroes. When Imperial propagandist Kile Simlex is sent to make a cinema-pict about legendary flying ace Lucille von Shard, he discovers she’s not quite what he expected.

DF: I recently took voluntary redundancy, so in the last couple of months I have gone from working full time to being primary carer for my son and being a full-on house husband. So cooking, shopping, washing clothes and/or watching The Lego Batman Movie for the sixty-fifth time are all distinct possibilities. I also read and write, though not usually at the same time.

ToW: Why this story? Of all the possible stories you could have written about these characters, what made you go for this one? They say you should never meet your heroes. When Imperial propagandist Kile Simlex is sent to Bacchus to make a cinema-pict about legendary flying ace Lucille von Shard, he discovers she’s not quite what he expected. [1] Related Articles Denny Flowers is the author of the novels Fire Made Flesh and Outgunned, the novella Low Lives and several short stories. He lives in Kent with his wife and son, and has no proven connection with House Delaque. This was a superb and deeply impressive Warhammer 40,000 read that really highlights Flower’s growing skill as a science fiction writer. Containing a unique and highly addictive narrative, Outgunned was an outstanding read that blended an exceptional story with some impressive glances at the wider Warhammer 40,000 universe. I had an amazing time getting through this book and it was one of the more exciting and compelling Warhammer novels of 2022 so far.
