The above examples could be produced in alignment with any ‘part’ of the 18th edition book. However, this set of inspection and testing guidelines serve to offer an insight into format, content style, and tone of questioning across the full examination. This understanding should be carried into revision endeavours on all topics included within the 18th edition book. Allocate an appropriate length of time dependent on each section’s volume of questions. This approach should be deployed for both revision and in the exam itself. The Essential Navigation and Seamanship course is a great supporting course for those new to boating, or as a refresher, and is available in a classroom or online.

Regulation 514.12 (Notices: periodic inspection and testing) now contains an exception for domestic (household) premises in certain situations. I’ve also been qualified tutor since 2008 and have taught electrical installation ‘C&G, EAL and Logic’ courses and we’ve been successfully teaching the Wiring Regulations online here at the-regs.co.uk since 2014 and have had hundreds of students pass 18th Edition exam – why not join them today? Recent Posts Part 6: What inspections and tests should be done to show it’s safe and the certificates to be used. This essential update to the IET Wiring Regulations will form the national standard to which all new electrical installations and additions, and alterations to existing electrical installations in the UK are to comply. A note has been added clarifying that where non-metallic pipes, e.g. plastic, enter the building and are then connected to metallic pipes within the building, the metallic pipes within the building do not normally require protective bonding as they are unlikely to be extraneous-conductive-parts. Reference to insulating sections has been removed. For this section, it is useful to have a decent grasp on the periodic test and inspection sequencing guidelines. Electrical Installation Condition Report This section outlines the relevant tests that must be performed on any installation prior to it being energized. The 18th Edition book is predominantly used by, but not limited to, electricians and electrical contractors. If you are an electrician, you are probably already extremely familiar with the Regs. It not only supports domestic and commercial installations, but it also underpins electrical practices in environments like agricultural premises, caravans, external lighting, mobile units, temporary installations, fairgrounds, highway equipment and street lighting. Regulation 411.3.1.2 has been redrafted. The regulation now requires that in each consumer’s installation within a building extraneous-conductive parts that are liable to introduce a dangerous potential difference be connected to the main earthing terminal. Anyone who has sailed in the busy waters of the UK will be thankful that the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, more commonly known as the COLREGS, were introduced.

COLREGS are quite simply the 'highway code' or 'rules of the road' when at sea. A commonly held misconception is that COLREGS are a guidance to help skippers understand who has right of way.Wrong. They are the law and a proven breach may lead to prosecution, even if a collision hasn’t occurred. Today, 28th March 2022, sees the publication of Amendment 2 to the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations. This update to the rules which the electrical industry must follow is designed to ensure industry regulations keep pace with technological change to maintain safe and efficient electrical installations. What this means for electrical contractors Chapter 5.3 - new guidance on inspection chambers plus additional guidance on surface soakaway design for gardens less than 100m2 in area. There are 38 separate rules within the COLREGS although some of the regulations are only mandatory for larger vessel, in principle they do apply to all vessels.COLREGS set out the conduct of vessels in any condition of visibility, specifically when in sight of each other, and also in or near areas with restricted visibility. They make it clear when you are the stand on vessel, the give way vessel and the correct action to take when in close quarters with other vessels to avoid a collision. They also help you to anticipate the actions of another vessel. This section includes changes to automatic disconnection of supply and additional protection. Section 717 - Mobile or transportable units Determine which ‘part’, sub-section and regulations within the 18th edition book the question alludes to. This is extremely important! The first two parts are your guide to the book. They provide you with the ‘scope’ of the Regs, explaining what’s included, what the basic principles of electrical installations are, and providing you with definitions of the most commonly used terms within the book.

Regulation 514.9.2 has been introduced to advise that all diagrams, charts, and information or instruction notices comply with the applicable standards specified. The next four parts are the practical application of those in-scope principles and topics, including important safety requirements with a predominant focus on reducing the risk of injury and damage. The concept is simple; when starting a new installation, you should consult the Regs and ensure you’ve considered all aspects that might impact your specific scenario. It should then be used as a reference on equipment and environment, and also as an assurance guide, either once you’ve completed the installation or on review of an existing installation.Appendix 4 includes minor changes concerning a cable surrounded by thermal insulation. Appendix 6 Model forms for certification and reporting

This is an entirely new chapter. Historically, utility companies have managed the public transmission and distribution network from the point of view of having central production adapted to demand variation. The objective of this chapter is to provide requirements, such that, low-voltage electrical installations are compatible with the current and future ways to deliver safely the electrical energy to current-using equipment either from the public network or from other local sources.Although a good knowledge of all COLREGS is essential, the steering and sailing rules set out in Part B (Rules 4-19) are the ones likely to be most significant to small boats operating in daylight, with good weather or restricted visibility. Lastly, it is an unfortunate truth that some electricians wrongly advise clients that installations have failed testing, basing their assertions on regulations set out in outdated edition guides. Whether this is to secure additional work or due to the tradesman’s ignorance is irrelevant; all electricians should arm themselves with the current legislation. This may not be key information for your exam, but honesty and transparency should be leveraged in whatever activity you undertake as an electrician- trainee or otherwise. In summary Take your time, but not too much! Read the question thoroughly and acquire an understanding of what it’s asking you. An increased focus on energy efficiency, including recommendations around the design and erection of electrical installations. Regulation 531.3.2 indent (ii) highlights the use of RCBOs for individual final circuits in residential premises to
