Description

The thrilling second album, produced by James Ford and Mike Crossey, is a breakneck technicolour journey through screwball punk and guitar-fuelled dancefloor heroics; a brilliant racket that proves there's infinitely more to the Arctic Monkeys' than mere pop songs; though it has them in spades. Music Direct reserves the right to change the terms of this promotion or discontinue this offer at any time. We spent a bit more time, because we’re a bit more into sounds – there’d be bits, or guitar sounds that we liked, and wanted to do bits like that. The tracks "The Bakery" and "Plastic Tramp" also mentioned in the NME interview did not make it onto the album, but were later released as B-sides on the " Fluorescent Adolescent" single. Starting with "Brainstorm," we get a propulsive electrical storm that provides a cyclical effect reminiscent of the 'Pulp Fiction' soundtrack.

In the United States, the album debuted at number 7 on the Billboard 200, selling around 44,000 copies in its first week and become the band's first top-10 album there.

UK's latest and greatest new sensation, The Arctic Monkeys, come up with a follow up to their smash debut, 'Whatever They Say I Am, I'm Not' with more experience under their belts. Along with the crisp guitar and steady bass, it’s easy for listeners to understand what sets the Arctic Monkeys apart from other groups, and what makes Favourite Worst Nightmare a true game changer: no detail goes unnoticed. In its first week of release, the album sold over 227,000 copies in the United Kingdom, going straight to number one on the UK Albums Chart. We did a session with [producers] James Ford and Mike Crossley on the last record and got on really well, and wanted to do something else – all year round I was thinking, ‘I want to try with them two…’.

The record itself embodies a more seasoned and worldly perspective that reflects the attitudes of the band members themselves; put simply, it’s got more of a bite to it. The playful "This House Is a Circus" and the heavy "The Bad Thing" almost live up to the aforementioned, but new territory is achieved with the shimmering "Fluorescent Adolescent" and the Stray Cats-like "Only One Who Knows". The album's title came from the lyrics to the song "D is for Dangerous", the third song featured on the album. Their progression was also highlighted with The Guardian saying "if you removed everything from the album except Matt Helders' drumming, it would still be a pretty gripping listen", [15] and The Observer praising the new sounds on the album referencing the "piercing, melodic guitar by Jamie Cook" and "where Turner reveals the other weapons in his armoury" when referring to Alex Turner's progression. The first two singles from the album, " Brianstorm" and " Fluorescent Adolescent", were both UK top-10 hits. And "Old Yellow Bricks" seals the bad deal, lamenting "You're a fugitive, but you don't know what you're running away from. For those who remember The Undertones, this album reminds one of the transition when they went from the propulsive punk to the artiness of 'Positive Touch'. But there’s a lyric in the ’D is for Dangerous' song, and it seemed to tick all the boxes for what we were after in a title. As far as concerns what is your favourite worst nightmare, I think I’d describe it by saying it’s like someone with a gambling addiction – they get something out of it, but they know it’s bad for them. NME and Uncut ranked it the second-best album of 2007, while Dutch publication OOR named it the best of 2007.
