About this deal

Character Design References (CDR) is an online platform that celebrates and showcases exceptional character-focused art within the realms of animation, illustration, games, and comics.

This is a used book - there is no escaping the fact it has been read by someone else and it will show signs of wear and previous use. I really liked Primal by Gendy Tartakovsky and I also like the look of Kid Cosmic although I find the pacing a little frantic. In my exuberance as a young student, I used a yellow highlighter to highlight all the parts of the book I thought were important – don’t do that. So conversely my least favourite part of the process is having to follow some kind of predetermined path to a predictable result. The survival guide will tell you what to expect, what equipment to pack, who to trust and hire as a guide, and where to rest for the night in Gwelf. A typical day for me starts around 7:00ish where I have a quick breakfast, check e-mail, and then hopefully be drawing by 8:00.

There is a lot to read and discover and while the book’s size would ordinarily be cumbersome, I think making it any smaller would lose a lot of detail in the images so I’m happy to have this big book! The survival guide will tell you what to expect, what equipment to pack, who to trust and hire as a guide, and where to rest for the night in this magical land steeped in history and mystery. Only it is not the Gwelf, it is a ball that was caught up in a tree and hitting the roof with a whomp, whomp, whomp. Larry MacDougall has done that thing-created a fantasy world that is completely believable, super charming, and more than a little bit dangerous. My family has always offered me a great deal of support and I would certainly not have made it through some of the tougher times without them. The book does justice to MacDouglall's watercolor work, and the text was a positive surprise for me.

After creeping around in the moonlight, bumping into each other and into trees, Big and Small finally capture the Gwelf in a sack. It is a very tricky process to use watercolour but I have been using it for literally decades now so I am starting to feel a little less afraid of it. The Gwelf was first created in Dig-It Land, and eventually expanded its natural range to other parts of the UnUniverse. The artists I respect the most now tend to be very loose and free – Hayao Miyazaki, Ashley Wood, and Claire Wendling would be three good examples. My copy is now old and deformed and the slipcover is shredded but luckily the book was very well made it is still holding together.
