Risking her life every single day—and almost getting caught several times—Miep brought food, emotional support, and news of the war to Anne’s family in their hiding space.

What does Barbara Rosenblat bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

All three of us firmly believe that the inspiration in this story — and Miep made a lot of this herself — is that she is so ordinary, and that anyone can do this. Without the continuous help of Miep, and other brave sympathisers including her husband, Anne would never have remained at liberty for so long.

When purchasing food for the people in hiding, Gies avoided suspicion in many ways: for example, by visiting several different suppliers in a day. When the warehouse laborers who worked below the annex went home for lunch or the end of the workday, the helpers, most of whom worked in the office, visited those in hiding, bringing supplies and news from the outside world. Also, I didn't realize that there was more time between their capture and the end of the war; it was more lengthy than I thought. When we met with school children in Germany and Austria, some of whom were descendants of Nazis, some said to us, ‘Our parents won’t talk about what happened in the war. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item.

The couple’s only son, Paul Gies, died last year; his widow and children remain committed to preserving their grandparents’ legacy. Some time later, when she was considering her next professional move after the television show ended, the couple sprang to her mind. They strapped a pair of wooden skates with curling blades to my shoes with leather thongs, and pushed me out onto the frozen surface. Born into an impoverished Catholic family in Vienna in 1909, Gies was originally named Hermine Santrouschitz. Foxed Foxing is the age related browning, or brown-yellowish spots, that can occur to book paper over time. I'm so sorry for the Jewish people; those who endured the "worst" that could happen and those that live with its history.

She was Austrian by birth, but in 1920, at the age of eleven, she was taken in as a foster child by a Dutch family in Leiden to whom she became very attached. If I had, I would have had to burn it, because it was too dangerous for the people Anne wrote about.

Miep, a married but still childless woman, had to secure enough provisions to sustain eight people in addition to herself and Jan — who was busy with other underground work, as well.
