Description

Traditional Chinese medicine has for a long time been employing acupuncture or acupressure, which rely on the concept of a qì energy system in the body: the meridian system. In this system, meridians are seen as pathways of energy or qì. The meridian system is based on distinguishing 12 primary meridians, considered to be responsible for the circulation of qì in the body, and eight collective vessels, whose function is to connect the primary meridians. The basic approach consists in understanding physical and psychological symptoms as being related to a dysfunction in the energy system. This dysfunction can be treated by different kinds of stimulation: acupuncture, acupressure, stroking the meridian pathway, or mentally concentrating on a specific meridian or meridian point. Apart from the hours of sound sleep, you should try to maintain continuous mindfulness throughout your waking hours. Along with reflections on mindfulness, impermanence, and the end of suffering, Bhikkhu Nyanasobhano is not afraid to delve into the topics of rebirth, karma, nonvirtue, and the roles of reasoned faith, ritual, and monasticism, revealing their continuing relevance for today’s seeker. His patient awareness of the workings of the mind and the natural world will enable readers to deepen both their practice and their lives.
